Most Yamaguchi figures of this era, even today can't really do like a two legs straightforward pose, knees lined up. Like sitting in a chair. Their legs need to be spread opened for one reason or another. They're meant to move enough for specific range of poses, aka dynamic poses, so it's not really retarded but unnecessary. There was only revolver joints available so it could get ugly, complicated, or fragile making all that belt area articulate out of the way. Every joint needs space for the two long pegs.
