The FR beast modes aren't bad at all honestly. They probably could've used more leg joints for the animals yeah, but thats an issue with any beastbot that isn't actually using the botmode arms/legs as the animal legs.

I watched BW, just I prefer robot animals over "realistic" animals. Mostly because of the compromise/shellformer nature of trying to do "realistic" animal transformers.
