Temperature, humidity, and lighting are all very important but sometimes there are things as simple as unfinished wood that can cause reactions.
Unfinished wood shelving (or wood with very cheaply done finishes that can off-gas over time onto the plastic and rubber can speed up the degrading or cause stickiness. Even having one figure in a case with other figures that maybe is "turning" can cause other figures around it to have problems and cause the melting phenomena.
So yeah people shouldn't immediately worry about rubber parts, but yes, they are usually the first parts of a figure to have problems if there are going to be problems.
