For those of us who find SOUL in the old and simpler designs of elements and figs, we may prefer the lesser detail since it encourages imagination and fun. The Lego of old is what we made of it, while something about newer sets (especially licensed ones) feel overly detailed and defined. Sets now have more specialized pieces, while older sets were composed of more versatile bricks. That's not even getting into color. Maybe I'm wrong here and I don't want to speak for others, but those are my thoughts
And by catalogues you were referring to the warm, soft, and dreamlike backgrounds and settings on boxes and in catalogs, that is absolutely part of the appeal
