I assume it's the ease of customization, if you get a base doll it's not too hard to get blank faceplates to customize and switch out, so you're not risking the full doll. Their bodies are also roughly the same size as other fashion dolls so they can fit a lot of clothing.
I think they suffer from the same problem as the BJD community where a lot of ppl make very ugly sculpts/dolls because it's just the "aesthetic".
