For me, a lot of the appeal and imagination came from the concept of these robots being stranded on this island for such a long time, not only did they forget their previous scifi civilization but they have been getting more and more primitive to the point where even their own stoneworks and temples are foreign and they don't remember how to create them or even who made them in the first place.
(With exceptions, like Hafu...)
