Sure there was that sentiment among WW1 pilots but you're still gonna die a horrible death from fire, crashing or simply being riddled with bullets. Life expectancy among rookies could be as little as a week at the height of the war, not helped by the widespread attitude of higher-ups that parachutes made pilots soft.
Honestly Lego's hypocrisy hasn't bothered me in a long time, there's plenty of options to get militarized plastic building bricks toys, even from Lego itself thanks to some of its licensed lines.
