In fact, the latter is one of the foundational building blocks of /toy/--people having goofy fun with serious characters, because that's the freedom that toys afford you.
I hypothesize that the reason why this is "different" all of a sudden when it comes to LGBT issues is because a lot of people have internalized issues with gay stuff even if they don't really realize it. "Internalized homophobia" doesn't necessarily mean you hate or want to beat up gays, it can simply mean societally-implanted negative ideas. If you find yourself so annoyed by a Bionicle holding a pride flag, ask yourself the real reason for that. Why are you not similarly annoyed by it holding say, a guitar, or an ice cream cone, or any number of other things that do not exist in that universe?
tl;dr: it's just people having fun, let them have their fun.
