On gundam, the biggest hill to climb is the painting and finishing since the kit flys together. I'd hazard to say that the finishing process is harder on gundam than it is on aircraft, but you're going to have to learn half of the hobby in this venture.
As for cost, Bandai makes more models of a narrower range of designs and does re-runs, whereas the other model makers do specific kits and designs less often, raising the prices on certain kits.
