If all else fails styrofoam sheets/blocks are pretty good because they don't absorb water (and plaster means water).
Just keep in mind that plaster is heavy and whatever you use at the very bottom needs to be able to support the weight (and not absorb water and warp or sag). I used MDF in pic related and it was a fucking nightmare.
