Scott "Toyguru" Neitlich, who used to work on the Masters of the Universe Classics line did a series of videos highlighting why the Star Wars sequels were terrible to market from a toy perspective, and approached a number of the topics addressed here. OP was discussing how bad the toys were, and Toyguru explained that the toys were following forced movie marketing trends involving female leads and forced diversity, because movies such as The Hunger Games were popular and every movie studio was trying to have their own Hunger Games, by having a strong female lead. He explained that kids use action figures often as "Avatars" for themselves to self-insert into a story, and that while there was indeed a market for non-white characters, Disney was doing too many and over-represented, and that over 60% of the toy market was little white boys, who wouldn't care about a female character like Rey, or Jyn Erso(in regards to Rogue One), and would want a male action figure that represented them, such as a Luke Skywalker.

He also worked on some of the Sequel toys and Rogue One toys.
