It's basically a compromise with the titan gimmick and trying to do the IDW design of the character, which I guess transformers into a cybertronian shuttle.

Seems like a lot of perfectly good designs were unfortunately paired with this stupid Titan gimmick just because it's what's happening right now. Hell, Astrotrain's design concept comes from as far back as 2006.

It would have been a lot less messy if they stuck with one pair of feet and not gone with the train feet (that really didn't work) since then it would have eliminated the messy gaps in the back as well as the other pair of feet sticking out.

Basically what happens when you have to engineer multiple gimmicks.

This is the probably the original proof of concept used by Hasbro and I suspect the titans master gimmick got in the way.

I suspect in the they tried to go for armored train and failed.
