Then they started to make something unique that Lego didn't have (super poseable minifigs). Then they kept improving the articulation and modularity of them. Then their plastic quality and parts fit improved. Then they started snagging some really nice licenses. Now they are in a position where they have a product that offers something unique over Lego, and the quality is generally excellent.
It's not hard to understand why that's desirable. They worked hard these past years to really make something of themselves, and it's paid off.
