>>9122413>salty weeaboo tearsThere's a reason why no one on /toy/ really gives a shit about pre-mid90s Japanese toys, unless they like those dog chew toys.
You don't now what it was like being into Japanimation in the 90s and the only options for merch are statues and model kits. And I'm not talking about Bandai's then-subpar model kits, I'm talking about expensiveass resin kits that needed paint and unposeably vinyl ones.
Companies like Kaiyodo existed back in the 90s and before, but guess what they were making? mostly model kits. Tons and tons of model kits, until suddenly, around the same time as everyone else in the US, they started making action figures doing the same preposed poses like you saw on Kenner doing for GI Joes XTREME and TOTAL JUSTICE figures except with a little more paint.
And who else existed back before the 90s? Good Smile? 2001. Medicom? 1996. Kotobukiya? They existed, making model kits and statueshit. Then in the mid-90s, they turned around and starting making dolls of anime adults like Lain. Weird how all these companies known for their adult collectibles started popping up around the same time or changed gears, huh?
Most "adult" series before the 00s survived mostly on sales of tapes, DVDs, games, and music btw. Somehow in the mid-90s, everything started getting articulated plastic merch that wasn't aimed at kids. Final Fantasy, Front Mission, Lain, Love Hina, and many other nerd popular series.
Why didn't they do this shit before, especially since Japan obviously had a known older market with OVAs and other adult series? Guess no one really figured out that enough adults would buy toys until...
