Even if every word in that cartoon strip is accurate, which I have a lot of doubt about because Todd is a known liar, Todd is being the asshole in it. It doesn’t matter if Neil cares about comics or what his political beliefs are, he’s still an artist who needs to get paid for his work.
As an artist who makes a living at it, you never do a job for free. When you do, you’re devaluing your own work while losing money on paying projects you could be working on. So even if we take that strip at face value, Todd is essentially trying to bribe Neil with “exposure” for the first five panels. Neil is right to say “nope” until money entered the conversation. And Todd, being an artist, should’ve known better than to bribe with free exposure.
Also, making money for what you do isn’t “selling out”, it’s making a living. Would any of you work your jobs for free? I somehow doubt it.
