That ring/peg should come out if you just heat up the part so that it gets soft. Use a pair of pliers to grab as much of the ring as you can to avoid tearing it. I just did this to show how easy it should be--half a cup of water, 1 minute (or 1.5) in microwave, short soak to soften everything up, pinch hard (if hand it still attached, to avoid tearing the cross peg) and pull.
