If you're starting out, get a pair of nippers, some scalpels and a couple packs of blades and some needle files plus high grit sandpaper and double-sided tape.
Nippers cut the gate, scalpel cuts the nub and needle files with some sandpaper stripes stick to them sand whatever remains flush. Change scalpel blades and sandpaper frequently.
