Something similar happened with anime Godzilla, which looks like they wanted to make a 'better' 2014 design without understanding why that looked the way it did (to evoke a bear for one).
Look at ThreeZero's Getter Robo design for example. It's the same but made more complex and detailed, and it has a style all of it's own without just being 'random panel lines everywhere'. Something like this would have worked great for CG Mazinger.
(Not the actual ThreeZero Mazinger though, they really missed the mark with that one.)
