The cement will evaporate quickly and "skin" will form on the surface of your "putty" which will make it not stick to the part you are filling (or it will stick poorly) so when you sand it later pieces of it will come off especially (where the layer of putty was thin) and you will need to fill some more.
From my experience melted sprue thing is not worth the effort, there are better products that work way more reliably.
