If your camera has automatic light metering, you can often trick it by focusing on a very bright part of the scene and cause the camera's light meter to crank up to compensate. This has the effect of making all the surrounding area darker. I do this when I want to make it look like a figure is in a dark area but I can leave the lights on so there's no ISO grain.
