Ships can be a bit of a handful at times, yes. Tiny PE and a sometimes rather unclear work order. For the first few I built I probably spent at least as much time staring at parts and instructions just trying to figure out in what order to paint and assemble things as I did actually painting and assembling.

I've built their Prince of Wales, great kit. What I've heard of their other kits is in the same vein. Wooden decks are nice, but by no means required in any (normal) scale. If there's any extras you really "need" for ships I'd say it's railings. Get some stretchy Uschi/Mig/EZ-line rigging thread while you're at it.
