Detailed animation is easy to fuck up, and animation is cranked out in places where speed is valued most of all, and not everyone can draw that well. You know why Bruce Timm made the BTAS designs simpler in later seasons? Because he got upset that they kept getting back crappy animation from certain studios, so he made the designs easier to draw.
