Aladdin was marketed as a family friendly action adventure movie for boys and young men, that just happened to have a sexy princess in it. Jasmine was originally supposed to be a spoiled princess that even had a song where she would sing about how great it was to be a rich spoiled princess which got cut out of the film.

They basically re-made the Star Wars Slave Liea scene, but swapped Luke Skywalker with Aladdin in hopes of giving young guys something familiar that Disney knew they already really liked.
Disney used to think the big bucks were in boy movies. In the 80s they were so afraid that The Little Mermaid would underperform that created this misleading trailer in hopes of trick boys into thinking King Triton was the actual star of the movie.
