Castlevania, which was marketed and sold to the US, gained many sequels due to that popularity. International games like this aren't sold solely to just one country. It was never "dug up", as it was always on everyone's list to get. Hence various games getting re-re-re-re-released as much as possible for decades.
This is why they've made merch for it for years and years, even in years there were no games. It was as much for our culture as it was for theirs.
