I think this is working out pretty well, all I'm doing is taking the base color, lighting it with some tamiya XF-2 flat white, as well as darkening it with some XF-17 sea blue and XF-1 flat black and then basically randomly airbrushing it on kind of like how you build up paint on modern fighter jets to give the paint that textured and toned look. I've never really tried it with a ship before but I'm really liking the results and think this is going to be standard for painting ship hulls in the future for me. It's a lot better than just having a relatively flat, monotone color that doesn't really pop and makes it look like the paint has a considerable amount of fading.
