Chrome powder is very fussy stuff, you need a super smooth black gel base, you can't apply too little or too much (brush off excess), smooth it out gently, and carefully brush on a UV-cured gel topcoat without disturbing the powder too much. Now clearly, a gel topcoat isn't going to work for gunpla, I think it'd be way too thick and start obscuring sculpted detail and softening corners. It'd also be a nightmare to apply. But here's the thing: the wrong topcoat can make the powder look bad on your nails, so I assume the same is true for gunpla topcoats. You might need to do some hunting to find the right one...if one even exists.
Oh yeah, and don't cheap out on powders. You can definitely tell the difference visually.
