That bronze colored piece on the top of his head is actually a button, and pressing it down opens his robot mode jaw; it's spring-loaded, so you need to hold it down to keep his mouth open, hence the difficulty in taking pictures of it. I have no idea why it's a thing, but it's still cool.
Now, getting into his transformation; as you can imagine, it's notreally all that impressive - it's the typical 'beast mode stands up' method they always do for quadrupedal animals, and the bulk of his actual 'transformation' is actually in his mane - you split it in half to reveal his robot head, rotate a piece around, snap it back together, then push his beast head down into his chest and pull the mane down over it to give him his long, flowing locks. His wrists kinda-sorta transform, too - those flaps fold back, you flex the wrists so that they're straight (they need to be angled in Beast Mode), and you fold his thumbs down.
