McDonalds did something similar with Inspector Gadget, where each toy was one piece of a fully interactive 12" Inspector Gadget action figure. Customers went so crazy for those toys that they sold out within like a week of launch and every McDonalds I went to had a sign saying "Sorry, we are all out of Inspector Gadget toys" hanging up at the counter.
The glass LOTR goblets from Burger King were true jewels, though. I still have the complete set, with the original boxes. The rubberized bases for the light up feature are sadly quite yellow looking now, but I'm pretty sure that I could retrobrite them. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Also, the batteries are about 20 years due for a change.
