To put it simply animals do not even chose this it is forced by the environment on them. To demonstrate this some fish did evolve to live on land because they shoved themselves near the land others stayed in the ocean, only what literally no one of these animals did know is that being next to land will result in a game breaking development.
Skipping all the jazz some monkeys at some point evolved brains and then bigger brains and then bigger brains.... You notice that most other monkey species simply decided to evolve stronger arms (this is why gorillas are far stronger then humans) and that was it. Only by a freak accident and going into this big brain thing did finally intelligence arise.
It turns out technology beats everything. Armor simply outclasses all other animals who can not keep up, technology can be developed in days or years, Evolution takes millions of years.
Technology allowed humans to go into the ocean breath under water and survive in cold climates.

It is that simply that they evolved faster swimming or fins etc while other animals evolved on land legs and other things to fit their environment. Humans evolved intelligence and what no one did know was that technology beats all and big brains give technology.
Think about it ! Humans can not survive outside tropical environments. Only humans mate clothing to keep themselves warm in colder climates.
