Hey, guys. Can I play with you?
I'm making a model of the Talyllyn Railway Number 5 Engine "Midlander", it's 16mm scale, or 1:19.5. The kit is by IP Engineering and I'm simultaneously impressed and very disappointed by this kit.
The kit itself is very basic, the body and running gear, with precious few additional detailing parts. For example, I've had to make additional parts out of brass using a file, with varying degrees of success. The whistle and brake pipes were made using brass rod and guitar strings low melt soldered together. This is my first attempt with white metal and soldering for structure, rather than continuity. I did find it pretty easy to work with however, and have had very few mishaps with it. The main issue is dealing with excess solder and I'm 99% sure I using the wrong method to join parts, but it's as solid as an ox. It's my first try and I'm happy with it.
HOWEVER - here's the issue.
The instructions had the chassis edge frame the wrong way around to the original, it's the same in the production photos too. So the base of this is the wrong way around compared to the actual Midlander engine. It took me a while to notice it, but I'm right, and annoyed about it. Lesson here? Always check against the prototype.
Now I'm rapidly getting to the point of having to paint it, but I don't know how best to proceed. I'm considering peach and black (Not outlandish given the liveries these things wore) but I'm not sure how best to paint it. Spray? Brush? Airbrush?
I'd like to wasp stripe it, but I don't trust myself to do a good job of that yet. Either way, feel free to take the piss. Thanks, lads!
