It was literally one of the first transforming car toys ever, so it's going to look awkward - your design, on the other hand, has that 40+ years of previous engineering knowledge already taken into consideration, since you know from your own childhood toys what works and what doesn't. The awkwardness is part of the charm of Missing Link, though, and I've never owned any version of this specific character until now anyway, so I think he's cool.

His cab is still a cockpit, and his little Dianaut friend can still sit in him without you ever having to remove him (though he faces down instead of forward). It's even possible to mistransform him in such a way that the cockpit can indeed point forward and act as a 'head' if you wanted, though it looks even more awkward than the normal transformation.
