True, all of the Bayformers are a mess of scrapmetal design-wise, but as I brought up on another board a little while ago, a satellite alt mode actually makes a lot more sense for the alt mode of an advanced robotic alien whose official role is supposed to be a 'communications officer'. Having a form that can directly hack into an enemies satellites to monitor their communications, triangulate signals and track specific individuals through things like their personal cellphones or GPS systems on their vehicles, or being able to directly destroy an enemy satellite to cause havoc and cut off communications down below is far more fitting - and far more terrifying. Plus he can deploy his minions to any point on the planet from orbit at any time. The specific model used in the movie may have been unimpressive, but imagine if they'd expand on the idea and make a proper satellite mode for him with modern engineering? Far better than an outdated tape deck mode that serves virtually no practical use.
I shall now brace for incoming flak.
