The body altering thing is debatable anyway due to the mouth--sometimes when it opens you can see Eddie inside, and sometimes it's a gaping void with no space for a head inside, that can swallow entire human limbs. They clearly like to play fast and loose with the rules, so claiming this "never happened in the 90s" seems like a risky position to take.
