It's fine once in a while in series with actual characters you care about, but only as long as they're part of that series.
There's various comics and books that have done what you've said, but none of them are big sellers, btw. So if you want middling sales/viewers it'll be like STar Wars Tales, but it'll never garner the fame of that one episode of the Simpsons.
