As for the colored pins and axles, before Lego came to the retarded conclusion that everything must be color-coded for shortbus passengers, axles were mainly black and occasionally in a different color and pins in generic black and gray.
And yes, sets did get custom colored ones on occasion.
See that Asimo polybag over there? It's the ONLY set in Lego's history that had white 3-modules-long friction pins.
