Putting this all here as a reference for myself, and also to document this project, which, at this point, might never be completed, idk.

I've always wanted to make a full minifig scale Orthanc, from LOTR. This is a very common project, there are tons of MOCs of Orthanc (typing "lego orthanc moc" into google nets you about 21,000 results), including the official version, set #10237 (pic rel). The problem is that most of these are based on the movie versions, instead of the version described by Tolkien himself. They are also comically short, compared to how tall Orthanc is actually supposed to be.
First off, there aretwo common minifig scales; there is 1:41 (where the minifig is assumed to be 171cm tall, and a minifig-meter is 3 studs in length exactly), and 1:31 (where the minifig is 129cm tall, and a mini-fig meter is 4 studs in length exactly). Minifigs are not proportioned accurately at all, and are either too short for their width, or too wide for their height. I've decided to use 1:31 scale because it lines up better, height-wise: for example, in 1:31 scale, a standard door (6 bricks, or 7.75 studs tall) translates to 1.9 meters, or 6.2 feet, which is closer to the height of an actual door (in 1:41 scale, the door would be 2.5 meters, or about 8.2ft tall).
