He was called “Emperor Palpatine” before the Prequels existed (in the books and comics and other media, I don’t think they called him by “Palpatine in the final cut of the movie, bu might’ve been in prior versions, like how in A New Hope, there’s a deleted scene where they talk about the Sith and actually say “Sith” in it) and his title of “Darth Sidious” in the Prequels, and his appearance in them, there was no secret they were the same person. I mean, I suppose him having a lightsaber could’ve been somewhat of a surprise since, outside of comics from the pre-Prequels era, we never saw him with a saber. From what I remember, even his rise to power, and overthrowing/dismantling of the Galatic Republic was stated in some of the old novelizations of one the Original Trilogy books (or maybe in the EU books, but it’s detailed pretty accurately to how it happened in the films, minus all the little details and nuances). Plus, you know, same actor for the role(s).
But I see what you mean with the General Grievous toy. Also, that toy was a pain to keep together. Mine kept on falling apart without even using the “exploding” gimmick. Then again, it could’ve just been the one that I had that had that issue.
