The prequels had clone troopers and droids selling out everywhere. There were multiple successful cartoons with kids (and collectors) buying everything up.
In the 00s, older fans were saying "only kids like that shit" and that was enough for the brand to continue for over a decade selling toys and video games year round.
My local Walmarts didn't carry Star Wars toys for half a year and i live in one of the biggest cities in the US. First time i've ever seen that happen since the 90s when the Hasbro/Kenner restarted the line.
Now that the new movie is coming up, my WalMarts have almost nothing but Reys and fucking Landos. Return of the Jedi Landos. How long ago did he fucking come out?
Before this year, i was IMPRESSED by the fact that stores couldn't sell out of fucking ARMY BUILDABLE stormtroopers from the new movies. OT and PT (and solo and RO) stormtroopers? Never saw them outside of conventions. Sequel stormtroopers? Fucking on clearance and they still peg warmed for months.
And to be fair, i did see the RotJ black series speeder bikes go on clearance, but they didn't last long.
