>>10660558The problem is that modern sets are too inconsistent - there's too much crammed into them. Gone are the days of simple, coherent ideas put together in a satisfying way, without tons of knick-knacks added on top. That's why the original themes suck (as far as both you and I are concerned).
Why don't they give us something simple as an original theme and always want wacky twists and weird mash-ups? Because the demographic they're trying to sell to (the kids of today) are vastly different than you and I were when we were kids.
Their attention span is short, their desire for simple consistent things is low - they want "everything everywhere all at once mashed into itself" in their toy. They don't want "cowboys" - that's boring. They want "super virtual cowboy+pirates that use magic".
At least that's my take on it. Look at the media these kids consume, the amount of stimulus per whatever unit of measurement you want to use and you'll quickly see what they are used to and why they crave that every little thing that they interact with spams them with as much attention-grabbing tentacles as can be humanly built into it.
