I'm doing a 3D printed Mechagodzilla using silver silk PLA. I got my settings dialed in just about perfectly but now I'm mulling if I should weather him, or at least the silver parts. The cons of weathering are 1) it makes the silver a little darker, and 2) it makes some of the layer lines a little more visible. The pros are that it makes him look a lot more believable and less toy-like, and the details are all a bit more readable.
I could do one more test head to try giving him a gloss coat before putting down a wash, although I'm not sure how the gloss coat would effect the look of the silver, or how well it'd adhere to the silk PLA. It also would mean a lot more work since every silver part on the figure will have to be gloss coated if I go that route, and potentially have a satin coat put over that if it turns out to be too shiny. At that point the silver effect of the PLA might get lost, so until I can do more tests I'm not going to assume I have more than these two options.
