Insecticon/Scarem was always one of the better Basics. I loved his little crossbow, and having his elytra open up and serve as weapon storage was awesome. I wonder why they changed his name when they released his TM2 form - they were very clearly intended to be the same bot.

Yeah, there's no way this wasn't intended to be an upgraded version of the same dude. Even kept the same beast mode and color scheme (but added some orange to the pallet).

I think they're just really old Decepticons? They all have the Decepticon faction symbol on them. All I know is that they were on Earth and active before the whole incident with the Ark (meaning they were technically around during the Beast Wars, but were off doing their own thing).

Not a specific character, but the Fuzors could use a remake. they were a cool concept, but were quickly abandoned for Transmetal 2s (which I never understood - they seemed inferior to Transmetal 1s, since all of them except Megatron lacked a third mode). I'd love to see a modern Torca, Airhammer,Silverbolt, and so on - except for Quickstrike. He just needs a reissue, since he was perfect as-is the first time around.

Funny enough the Insecticons are insects in G1 because they took the form of the lifeforms on Earth. In the opening multiparter, the Autobots and Decepticons become vehicles because teletraan thinks they're the dominant lifeform of Earth. Which implies that if Teletraan realized otherwise it would've shoved them all into some sort of human form.

ehhh it's a pretty different take on the stag beetle, to the point of looking more like a water beetle (where those are arms and not jaws). plus they called it scarem, showing they don't know what a scarab is (we did get a rhino beetle transformer though and he fucking rocked). I dunno, going by Scavenger obviously being Inferno, you might very well be right. i dont think any other toy-original characters got transmetal forms did they?

My favorite Fuzor was Skyshadow. He was a bit of a standout even back then, even getting an elaborate CGI fancomic where he appears as Dinobot's mentor (for non-commercial 3D modeling in 1999 this was really impressive)But I fear a new version wouldn't have his elaborate paintjob.

I would love to see fuzors picked back up and getting all new characters. fuck, I'd be happy with brand new NORMAL beasts. a lot of what these designers have been putting out aren't too bad, but are hamstrung by having to be show-accurate. maybe let's see what they come up with on their own?

Spittor did. So did Iguanus.
Also, it's still my personal headcanon that BW Iguanus and G1 Iguanus are the same dude, and he finally got his wish to merge with his Pretender shell (which is now officially the case with the Legacy release of him).

i love how snapper's weapon was just a chunk of shell with flip-out barrels, that he just holds on one forearm. if he got remade I think we'd probably get some nice pop-out forearm guns like Primal has, but the shell could still eject something useful too. also maybe he could have real hands.

but yes everyone knows Kingdom had some bad ones, we know multiple designers work there, and the same one ruined rhinox and scorponok. but the others are actually good at their job. I want the guy who came up with 'cat leg folds up into robot shin' finally solving the cheetor problem.. to do something original.

Didn't he also do Ravage? I liked how the panther legs stowed into the slots in his back previously occupied by his robot arms in Beast Mode. Still wish they had the guns attach to his hips in such a way that they'd point forward in Beast Mode to emulate his G1 cannons.

Quickstrike is awesome but I think a redo could improve him a little. Specifically doing away with the squirty thing (IIRC that thing disintegrates on most Quickstrikes) and whilst not accurate I'd like to see his non-snake arm redone a bit. Like, have one half of his legs stay on his body (folding up as "ribs" or whatever, there's only 4 of them) and the other half reconfiguring into a 4-digited "big hand of death" rather than the weird hairclip thing of the original.

wow I didn't even notice that. I was distracted by how the new way they fold back means they can't cross over each other like cheetor and tigatron.. and also their articulation is messed up a bit if you swap them back (they come swapped in the box)

well they attach to his beast mode kidneys pointing forward, that's something! they're the robot mode thighs, so...
one neat thing is you can store cassette ravage's weapons by jamming them into the beast mode arms , then he has like, rocket boosters in robot mode maybe.

I'm with you, but

not really an improvement. might as well have the legs line up orb-weaver style so you have 4 huge thick fingers, not so spindly. Or a more normalish hand that merely has two thumbs on one side and two on the other, with four normal fingers oriented.. it's the little things that avoid the dreaded hairclip hand.. and maybe you could still arrange it that way for show-purists
but the other good way would be to just leave some legs hanging off of the shoulder or elbow, like he's half a tarantulas. either way, the legs should be jointed so he can move them like proper fingers.

That's fair enough and I'm 100% with you. I was thinking the big hand would be reworked such that it wouldn't just be a more articulated hairclip with less digits; it would transform such that you have one thumb and three fingers. Either way works though and actual joints I'm 100% for.

I think no matter what, the legs are just kind of too big to become a hand.. but he's weird, so it's okay. Might be possible to have the FIRST segment of the legs all line up with each other to form sort of a longer wrist (and yknow you could delete part of the robot mode arm since it does nothing in beast mode really) , and THEN the rest of the segments form the fingers.

That's doing it (and a lot of the Transmetal 2s honestly) a disservice really. The way the frill becomes a sort of samurai hakama and the tail becomes a ponytail are really nice touches. By Transmetal 2s, the designers had done quadrupedal beasts enough to start adding some flourishes to the transformations. Sure, most of them still used the beast limbs for robot mode, but look at how Tigerhawk mounts the hindlegs of his beast mode to his shoulders, or the way Spittor transforms with his beast mode to the side.

Also a very good idea. There have been a few redesigns that follow the same basic concept. This IMO is the best interpretation, obviously with some artistic license taken but the actual idea is very similar to what we're talking about and IMO is possible

i got these guys in a bulk lot and so far have enjoyed them more than what i got the lot for in the first place

God I hate the designs of beast wars characters so much. A scorpion has two fucking weapons right there in the front called pinchers that would have looked cool in robot mode as hands. Instead he has a weird ass 8foot long snake for one hand and a cluster of six scorpion legs for the other and it looks so fucking terrible.
I don't know what it is with beast wars but the character designers went so far out of their way to make sure everyone had the dumbest most inconvenient looking hands

There are liberties with the transformations but point A and point B are both already determined.

I'd love more OC characters like the many many we got before Generations became the main line.
But I also recognize that toys are a much tougher sell without any associated fiction.

Thinking of it the issue seems to be mostly using about 60% of the beast mode to make just the robot's sheens and the shoulders having a really wonky placement, the latter seems to be a recurring problem with the design when being translated into a toy and the former seems to be an attempt to change the silhouette of the shins to look less like rhinocerous legs. I don't count the head because it could be fixed in a rerelease, it's just the head, but the shoulders and transformation would need an entirely new mold to be fixed.
Maybe the best way to do Rhinox's shoulders would be to copy the AY Revoltech shoulders because universals have so far failed to get the look, or function, right. Have a three parts swivel joint with two balljointed ends between the arms and body with the center inside the shoulder. I'd draw it but I'm only starting to learn paint.net.

Anon some of those parts can't be fixed without extensive retooling. It's not just an over tightening/loosing issue, somewhere in the 3D design phased they fucked up bad, they will have to go back to the molds if they plan on fixing it which means years later, not months it will take to fix this.

The combiner shoulder is also held up by a flimsy pin that passes through a ratchet and into the purple section. I frankly don't see that lasting very long, my first copy had that section just break off after a few transformations, and that's after I did anon's fix to lessen the strain of the arm connection.

and I'd like to see the pincers fold away as forearm shields so he can have normal hands, but still flip the pincer out for battle (in the meantime it is elbow spikes).. but another fun way might be having the pincers be kibble, hanging in back in robot mode, and waiting to flip forward for attack mode

Honestly, it's a real shame because it does a lot of things I like, but the toy has legit problems in stability and engineering that are just baffling, like the ratchet teeth sections barely being flexible on most of the body (they literally scrape the mushroom sections of the hips for Motormaster because the one's in that section do not flex AT ALL, same for the combiner arms shoulder versions).

I'm thinking more like the other anons have noted that this has to do with doing more computer only designer work that can't take into account physically issues. For example: the combiner shoulder's on Legacy Motormaster/Menasaur is a very similar issue on the then planned voyager Titan Returns Apefaces Monkey/jet back that in the physical test type phase would break and was clearly flimsy. This delayed the toy until they decided to do a nylon dense prototype during the Siege line production that past. I wounder if the 2020 lockdowns lead to them skipping the physical testing phase and we go from render to unpainted production types. Jumping that far ahead would make it a much bigger nightmare to both catch issues as well as change them because you would be on the heels of mass production rather than a couple of years off.

He didn't appear in the original BW show or shares a mold with a show character, which means his chances of getting a toy was zero from the start. Shokaract, Antagony and Cryotech for example have better chances of getting toys because of this mold sharing feature.

I think the most annoying part of Menasor's shoulder design flaw is that this should could have been designed better, the purple section could have been redesigned to be slightly larger to accommodate the ratchet (the entire purple section has enough space for a redesign due to where it ends up in trailer mode), the ratchet could be made bigger, you could have a tube pass from the shoulder bit and the grey section, be locked by the combining the ratchet to it, then using a screw to tie the whole piece together, then using something else to tie the tube to the grey section of the arm? I don't know, but the current design is just flawed and it doesn't take opening up to notice. If just moving the arm outward has this gap start forming if you don't jam a finger into the grey section to prevent it, then keep you thumb on it to, again, prevent that gap from forming. All my rambling, and they could avoid all of this if they just reused a CW combiner joint on the arm sections and give it some space on the Motormaster bits for it.

If I recall the context of the scene correctly, the satellite where they were hanging around in got hit by the shockwave from the Transwarp explosion set off by the Planet Buster (which apparently rippled across both space AND time). The power went out, the emergency backup lights (like the white one on the ceiling) came on, and these shadowy guys started talking to each other. When they went up to the table, the red lights came on and illuminated them; they weren't intended to be actually red.

as I understand it, they either wanted to, or were told by Hasbro to, include Tripredacus somewhere, at a time when he was just planned (we will have tri-combiners and here are their names).
But the toy prototypes weren't ready by the time the episode had to have its characters finished, so they either chose to, or were told by Hasbro to, not make them very clear or even try to mimic whatever was known of Tripredacus, and not use the actual names of the individuals.
That entire last season was very "We are scrambling to try to include shit, and toys keep messing up our plans" time for Mainframe.
I wonder if Silverbolt being named Silverbolt is also part of this little mix-up... since he's part of Magnaboss.. but I think he came before that whole thing.

of course the coolest one is kaprosuchus. Huge long legs for speed, multiple sets of saber teeth going in both directions, badass horns on the head.. but a normal short-legged croc makes it easier to fold the croc legs away and use body chunks as the robot limbs.

Doesn't help that more and more of the figures are boxed windowless packages making it impossible to know if there are any issues until you open it. Hell when I got my Earthrise Scorponok it had a rattle in it because something was loose and I had to debate if I return it sealed because Pulse doesn't do returns on open merc or take the risk and open it. If they still had the window designs I would have seen that his collar came lose and it was nothing serious, instead I had to figure out backup plans if this then $120 figure had serious issues I couldn't see unless I opened it. Now it's moving all the way down to Voyagers soon meaning very few figures are left to buy that you are not taking a chance of getting a lemon with. It's not even factoring in figure swaps.

That seems dd considering Tripredacus was like middle 97 and the Transmetals were all late 97. Tripredacus' toy was out before Season 2 was in full swing and being towards the tail end I doubt they were unfinished. Most likely it was just a budget issue.

Its not like Dinobot was proportioned like a real raptor. BW early on was basically doing the G1 beast proportions, just with organic textures. i it has four legs it was feline, if it had two legs and a long tail it was a dinosaur, etc.

When Bob Forward and Larry DiTillio were putting together the Agenda story they needed a Predacon leader or council to set up the narrative of the transwarp wave hitting Cybertron/near Cybertron and how they would respond. They liked how Tripredacus sounded for a council group and went with them, the original plan was to make them look like the existing toy sans the Beast mode/parts, but time got the better of them as they were to ambitious as they needed to make Predacon Ravage, his ship, as well as the Ark and all it's sleeping crew so the council got very poorly made designs as their importance to the plot was weakest of them all thus we got red light robots.

Even Barricade had basically his entire alt mode hanging off his back. He needs an SS more than anything else. I think Beastbox/Squawktalk would be a decent higher up, while guys such as Piranacon wouldn’t fair so well with the regular organics and would rather try to achieve transmetal forms all together to let them get gun forms for each of them for example, Monstructor would be interesting to see how he works as a pretender to beasts bot

Those three faces recycle -a lot- of already available parts. Ram Horn used Starscream render from the S1 episode possession with parts of Terroraurs beastmode like the wings becoming his crest, Sea Clamp reused Trans-mutate model, and Cicadacon was parts of Megatron and S1's Unicron head.

Yeah its probably because when BW started I was getting into Kindergarten and by the ending I was in third grade, which is a pretty huge formative time as far as what you're learning. BW felt like such a long time even though it finished up around early 99. Meanwhile POTP was longer now from today but feels like it could've been two years ago to me.

autistic headcanon time: since Beast Machines reused some Ark models for Cybertronian civilians, my headcanon is that Cybertronians often use designs based of famous G1 heroes. So years in the future you'll see tiny cybertronian reproductions of 80's cars and aircraft zipping around.
This sort of fits in with Transformers being Earth popculture junkies in general, and how IRL a lot of fashion is dictated by famous figures.

Sometimes I'll hear people over 50 talk and they just start skipping decades when remembering things. Like say "Yeah that was 85, or 95". An interview with a Street Sharks designer was like that, guy just skipping time going over his career and forgetting when Street Sharks began or ended. The chest area between the lower jaw kibble armor and the arms is identical to Kingdom Rhinox's sculpt. That area is covered in rhinoceros hide on the T30 Rhinox.

Yea, since Beast Wars actually. The internets been around for a long time. You can look up theories and speculation on Alt.toy.transformers from back then. Maybe not kids but a lot of ATT posters were like 13.
Honestly communication on old forums was better than twitter. Remember 4chan is based off a 1999 era website. On twitter you post and very likely it falls into the void. On forums you'd post something and were likely guaranteed a discussion.

I feel bad for show creators when fanboys ask the, questions and they forget or mix up details. Floro Dery got crucified for this fandom for not remembering exact details of something he worked on 30 years before. Its a job, even if you love it its still a job. I feel bad for Toriyama because people rage over him forgetting details from Dragon Ball; man worked like 70 hours a week, he just wanted to go home and build model kits at the end of the day

Corporations seem to believe that we're worthless as a demographic to appeal to, because the people in the generation before us are less cynical and far more vulnerable to nostalgia bait. It's why we're still getting G1 wank and the 4th Ironhide in 6 years soon and Kingdom Rhinox will be the final attempt at the character until the next anniversary. There was more active discussion though. Again, you go on twitter now and get what? Your post gets buried by the algorithm. You go on discord, and discussion in divided into dozens of little clique discords. The best places to discuss transformers are here(which isn't really "modern") and forums.

FWIW /co/ used to have huge generals and speculation when TF animated and Prime were airing.

Honestly came out of nowhere, rattrap would've been a better leader. The best thing the BW writers did was basically making Cheetor an assclown when Hasbro wanted him to be super special. Season 2 was suppossed to be about him learning to be a hero with a glowing heart on his stomach and he spends most of Season 2 jobbing.

We need somebody to doccument all this stuff because it’s a lot, and what if one of the pods landed on the moon from the escape stuff, a lot less energon crystals on there but a lot more weird skeletons there too so it would be too hard to safely get back to the surface for example or to side with either side during the beast wars as a potential character

That's normally what they do when a show is well received. Beast Wars season 2 and 3 of the western show came much later because the 1st season did so well they wanted to do their own easter shows like BWll and Neo. They also did this with Ninja Turtles. Japan is a proud country, they like flexing if a western product is doing well in their market to try and show they can do it better.

Original is a toy, great gimmics but is a brick. CW update was a low effort repaint with new head. New leader will be much better in terms of accuracy, articulation and play pattern with rest of WFC/Legacy.

Because outside of the head it looks nothing like Armada Megatron since it's just a G1 Megaron figure (One that wasn't even that good as a G1 Megatron in the first place) repainted in Armada Megs colors because they're both Megatrons that turn into tanks. It has none of the design elements that are emblematic of Armada Megatron like the tank tread shoulders or the under-arm cannon or the H-Tank altmode. Not to mention the proportions are all over the fucking place on him with the huge-ass forearms and the stick-like legs, but that's more a problem with the original mold than that repaint.

The modern equivalent of that figure would be if instead of Legacy Armada Starscream getting a brand new figure they just took the Earthrise Seeker mold and painted it in Armada Starscream colors and passed it off as part of the "Armada Universe".

In contrast Beast Hunters was never even broadcast in Japan. They just went for TF Go as the "conclusion" to TFP.

Other factors is they go way of script and hack shit up. Their Beast Wars show Primal was the original G1 Prime(Convoy) and they fucks things up when you look at S2 and S3. Normally they just call it a wash and move on but the sales were too strong so they did Beast Wars ll and Neo to then eventually do hard rewrites of the dialog for Season 2 and 3 of the OG show to make sense why Prime can meet himself. Beast Machines didn't air until much later because of that insane mess they did to themselves.

They did the same thing in Prime where they heavily edited the last few episode of season 2 where the Autobots defeated Megs and crew which makes about 5 episode the already short Beast Hunters series unusable so they just did GO!

Beast Wars: Super Lifeform Transformers aired well over a year it launch in America in the fall of 1996. It's first episode in Japan aired the same month Season 2 rolled out in Canada/America. The issue as I already stated was they were to fast and lose with the edits and fucked up the dub and edit work making seasons 2 and 34 a mess

The cannon was not on his back. One of the most recognizable trait to this version of Megatron besides the shoulder pylons and the antlers and they didn't do it. I always appreciate it when they make a new Megatron and they place his fusion cannon somewhere else other than his arm. That's why I seethe when they release a G2 Megatron and its just a recolor and not a new mold or a even a retool to place the cannon on his shoulder. At this moment in time, the best representation of G2 Megatron is the Super7 Megs that doesn't transform. And the best representation of Armada Megatron is still the original.

Over the entire 16 year span of CHUG from Classics to Legacy, literally every character from the G1 cartoon has gotten at least one modern day figure (some characters getting multiple figures) with the sole exceptions being Sureshot and some of the Throttlebots. The base looks like a base but you specifically said "disguise". It's an awful disguise- anyone who sees that is going to realize it's a fortress and thus a target. And that spaceship mode is far worse than Metroplex's bucketwheel excavator mode.

You know, after nearly a decade full of G1-lites (RID2015, the shitty Mahcinima series, Cyberverse, WFC Trilogy, and now Earthspark), we could do with a show that actually tries to shake the mold a little. Keep Prime and Megatron, sure but do something different with them besides "Tractor Trailer" and "Military vehicle" for the umpteemth time. Create new characters again instead of reusing G1 templates again and again for characters like Grimlock and Starscream. There's no point in a franchise having multiple timelines/universes if all the characters act the same way in each one. I think the show itself looks like shit so far, but at least they're taking a gamble with the whole "Earth-born Transformers" thing.

You can still technically implement the Powerlinx gimmick onto the new Starscream and not sacrifice anything (well maybe the budget). Just have a Minicon peg at the end of the jet inbetween the two cannons for Swindle to rest on and that's it. Doing so would not only allow that but also backwards compatibility with the older Minicons even if it may be useless in Robot mode. So far from images and the stream Starscream doesn't have any Minicon port and that really disappoints me, everything else is fine though.

Anyways Figueroa just posted this Springer design he made for Hasbro that never got made. I assume this would be been early classics considering that's when he was working for them the most. Really like the shoulders.

This is probably my favorite general on the site, even with the ups and downs. Maybe I should take era-appropriate photos using older computers and cameras. Could be fun. don't get me wrong, I don't think there should be a LOT of them. it's like autobot jets, they're rare and special. it's not so far as, say, an autobot TANK. that would be as inappropriate as a decepticon family sedan or other boring, mundane car like a compact or something.
a decepticon could be a low-rider bike or a crotch rocket, but it would never be a little round scooter with a sidecar.

From what I hear, Legacy might have had a fix in the later batches. Pick him up around Christmas and you should be in the clear.
I agree it sucks there's not enough Scramble City functionality
Also pissed that the Airlock base connectors and effect parts haven't carried over into Legacy, there's no reason not to include them

I mean it looks like it's molded to the waist assembly. If you try to unscrew the engine, the waist it seems like it'll come apart into two pieces where the hip joints are fitted. So you'll be left without an ass entirely. Though I guess that means a third party might come around and fix it or you could 3D print a replacement butt.

I was literally going to post that photo (from at least 2017?) but then thought "posting an anon's pleasant photo might be weird, when I have something that's worth a chuckle".
It's the only image I have of animated Swoop, but a very pleasant and elegant one. Animated was neat in having different body types and allowing for more engineering shenanigans. I wonder what altmodes there are that would normally have "you're gonna have that thing be the chest and this be the backpack, and just get basic posability" be opened up to new possibilities thanks to "we don't need to care about conventional proportions anymore".

Went out of my way to get him ($20 or so?) I think before TR Hot Rod came out, but well after Classics. Just something to point at and say it's Rodimus. Owning 86 and Kingdom, animated is in storage somewhere, might dig him out now and then. His proportions are certainly unusual, but pretty fun. His bow is eh, but mostly because it's difficult to pose, and I'm not used to bows for bots. But new and creative is good!

Lol that's in my garage, it is an old photo though. I do love the skinny bots Animated gave us, Oil Slick Swoop and Prowl are beautiful toys. Arcee and Blackarachnia are still pretty great, even the chunkier ones like Sentinel, Soundwave and Cybertronian Optimus are fun to transform. I think a lot of people didn't care for Blitzwing but I still really like him too.
Damn I should switch my shelves around and put some of them up again, it's been a while.

Well, that's a bit endearing. Just getting some discomforting vibe from the art style and I'm not quite sure why. Fetishists? Deviantart? They joined the realm of the dead. Ironfist/Gauntlet should be here too, last year his thighs' mushroom legs both gave out like they were nothing. Cracked sockets for balljoints are the common fatality here, idk how to replace one when it dies. Shockwave's breakage was at the elbow around the pin, so he's a goner without a full arm replacement I think. I can't bring myself to toss any of them on the off chance I ever find a way to repair them.

If I can ever get around to trying to fix them up, they won't be. The Legends Bumblebee only suffers from a crack in his elbow, one that threatens to shatter the socket if stressed even a little. I need to put a layer of something on it to strengthen it without the stuff cracking and falling off, I need something that'll stick with a little flex to it, then that Bee can ride again. The others need more extensive medical care.
Also Heavyload's big dumb head on a Classics Bumblebee sounds hilarious.

Sounds like you have it pretty much figured out. I know I took out classics Bee from his bin, since the chest window/harness thing broke on one side. Should be able to just superglue it? I'm pleased with TR Bee but Classics looks nicer. Can't believe I was a softie for Bee even back then, I vaguely remember hating/disliking him for a while, don't really know the timeframe of it.
