I love these threads I'm finally working on my own diorama for all my 1/12 scale stuff. Having trouble with flooring and walls because I'm stubborn about details and don't want to use paper facades. So I think I'm going to at least make my own mini bricks and lay a mini brick wall. Should be a nightmare im excited

They've been selling them for a while for about a year (come in four models: 60s TV with Batman clips, 80s TV with Back To the Future 1 clips, and two 90s TVs, one with South Park S1 clips and one with Friends.

They sold for shit at $25 a piece and shelf-warmed like crazy. They've only just now started to clearance them out and I picked up the South Park one for $5.

I don't know if this would be the right thread to ask in, but I've been watching tutorial videos lately on how to make my own figure dioramas, and i see a lot of folks using packing foam, but a lot of others using insulation foam. I just want to know if it matters which kind you use on any given project.
Like, is insulation more appropriate for one type of project where packing is more appropriate for a different kind of project, or are they completely interchangeable, you'll get the same results for anything regardless of what you use?

What do you want to use foam for? As a base? you would probably want to use something dense. There are a lot of different kinds of foam just pick what will work for your project

Foam is lightweight and cheap which is why it tends to be used. You can either sculpt it with a hobby knife/hot wire or build a frame with it to layer over with another material like clay depending on what you're trying to achieve. Be aware that aerosel cans contains solvents which can dissolve foam, so coat it with something like modge podge or a varnish in advance.

Anyone get frustrated not really knowing what to search for, for specific things? I'm having no trouble finding stuff like car door handles, windshield wipers, even the occasional gearshift, but no window cranks or anything except in like 1/24 scale, where it's printed out on tiny thin sheets of metal.. and no like, bench seats or anything. Just wanna spruce up a bare toy 1/12ish van is all. RC car stuff should work fine but that doesn't seem to focus on interior much.

Yeah at a certain point of specificity you have to just build your own stuff. I run into the same issues. I have a pretty specific aesthetics in mind and care about detail so its very hard to find stuff premade. I've learned to just design and build my own stuff. Just bought a 3D printer too and am learning how to design stuff digitally.

I'm a sucker for the mini brands shit since series 2 but its very frustrating how out of scale everything is. They're just display pieces mostly. Tho the "Foodies" series is actually pretty great for my 1/12 scale collection. Pic related.

It's a mixed bag. The smaller IRL items tend to be scaled for larger figures/dolls, while the large IRL items are scaled closer to 1:12.

That guy is wrong. It's the exact opposite. Rement's trading figure lines that come in blind boxes have small items that are perfect for 1/12, but the furniture is always too small because they have to fit into the tiny boxes. The last thread had the same question and someone answered it definitely with pictures.

The small items like bottles and books are 1/12, the furniture is 1/20-1/24. The small items are perfect for 1/12, but the furniture is absolutely undersized.

these came in, great little barrels. top lacks the iconic slight indentation with little circular cap, but that should be easy to fix if I feel that anal about it later.
think I'm gonna paint the purple one silver once I goo-gone all the labels off. god everything is coming together, now I just need a cheap 1/10-1/12 cadillac eldorado that isn't made of expensive and hard to customize metal...

Nice, one thing i noticed when cutting this foam is that you need an extremely sharp knife to stop those little rolled edge bits on the top of the third stair.
Everything else is free texture!

i don’t know if you anons build from scratch or from kits but how do you get yourself to finish one?? i’ve had picrel like 70 percent finished on my shelf for months. i want to move onto another project but it’s not like i don’t like the kit I’m working on now, i’m just bored of it…

I've built 3 of those kits and they're rather boring. Also not in scale and there is so much tedious shit to do. I finished them but ended up smashing them and scavenging the parts from them for other stuff.

Also it's okay and normal to take breaks from projects. I have like 5 things i'm actively working on and just work on the one that seems the most fun at the time. No reason for this hobby to be a job

Same I can't justify spending $60 in a plastic sheet with holes in it. I tried making one out of MiniBrands shelves I had laying around. But ran into the issue of mounting. Will probably just print a wall and pins to mount with soon

I know this was talked about a few threads ago, but does anyone have any insight on 1/12 vehicles? I have a few motorcycles and plan on building a garage. A lot of RC stuff is in 1/10 but they usually dont have opening doors and lack a lot of detail.

I know a lot of Barbie and similar lines have had good vehicles in the past but its really hard to search for stuff like that.

It seems most of the Bratz line are compatible. WPL's D12 is confirmed to handle 1:12 figures, and I believe the D42 will as well. I'm not certain on the scale of C34 and C44. They look like they'd be fine for import stuff at the least.

And I happen to have a shitty 1/12 model of that bike and with some pretty minor mods and paint i can make it pretty similar to their cool military bike. So I'm basically done with my first practice piece, just need some feedback.
I used different techniques on the left and right. Left I watered down the paint and did two washes before dry brushing, on the right I used one coat of undiluted before dry brushing. What do you guys think yielded the better result in achieving a "Snake Mountain" vibe? Right seems more cartoonish which seems appropriate, but the left might allow for figures to "pop" more when displayed against it.
I'm also not sure what I did on the stairs looks so great so advice there would appreciated

The stairs look better because there is a lot of contrast which highlights the detail. And since there isn't much detail on the "snakes" they end up looking vague and unformed because they dont have that same contrast. I'd suggest making the base of where those snakes stand to be a different color entirely, maybe even the same as the stairs. It seems like this is all meant to be simulated stone carving and in real life nobody would paint the ground the sculptures sit on. Also idk how far you want to take this with detail but you could potentially look up refences of snake stone carvings. A lot of ancient carvings and sculptures of snakes are pretty simple and would be easy enough to recreate with your diorama here. Good luck anon i look forward to seeing what you do

it's just papercraft. There's probably some ready-to-print files out there but most people just take digital images of the boxes and print them and fold them into shape. You can do a lot with just a 2D printer

For context though, regarding the colors and detailing on the spikes, I'm planning dioramas specifically with MotU figures in mind, and Snake Mountain was purple-pink stone. Maybe trying to mimic this in itself might not be the right call, idk, but that's what I was going for...gray pathways among purple stone and spikes.

Re-Ment Witch House series has a pretty good plague doctor mask. Just a bit smaller than it should be for 1/12 but it looks good next to a figma. The straps on the back actually unbuckle so you could put it on a figure if you wanted. Cute set overall lots of great accessories

I just checked and it fits pretty well on all my figs. Its quite big on the synthetic human. Im not a photographer but i tried to get a good pic of it. It's got some good detail considering its solid black.

Built and painted the little armory weapon case. I don't think this kit is very good, would be better to scratchbuild your own if you want one. The ammo cans which were included do look good, but I didn't paint them yet

That, also the fit wasn't as good as their gun kits, there are very visible ejector pin marks on the inside, and due to the modularity of the kit you end up with visible peg holes on the corners and on the inside.

The scale is a little wonky, but figmas fit inside very well. The stretcher and internal cabinets are to small (and I painted some of it because I didn't like the bare plastic look). The roof comes off to make it easier to play with and light.

Yeah, it scales perfectly with 1/10 FAGs. The kit is very nice, but was one of the first things I ever built and painted, so I just see a lot of mistakes now. For instance, the tracks should move and the front should be articulated, but i had to glue it all together. Also I made a big old mess of the paint. Please don't tell /smg/.

Thanks, it was slightly inspired by mgsv actually. I will at least add a desk with some radio equipment, and I also want to add a sandbag wall with a machine gun emplacement but I can't figure out a better way to do that than sculpting with greenstuff, but I would like it to be removable/movable. Scrubs or some other plants sounds like a good idea also, I'll look into that.

They are from one of the damtoys 1/12 vietnam figures, as is the backpack. They fit on the figma swimsuit body using friction between the sides of the ankles and the boots, there are no joints in the ankles at all. On a sozai-chan body they fit on the ankle joints, but that increases the height more.

There are a lot of options in 1/16, which look alright with anime girl Figmas if you don't need it to scale perfectly.

i mean vehicles/models that would scale as models within a 1/12 scale diorama. Stuff like this from a Re-Ment blind box. Like ultra small scale vehicles and stuff like this space shuttle.

1/144 scale models scale out to be exactly the size of a 1/12 model in 1/12 scale, pictured is a 1/144 King Tiger from ustar hobby. For planes I believe 1/350 and 1/700 scale kits meant to go with ship models would look like toys when held by 1/12 scale figures, but I don't have any so I can't confirm

Anyone know where I could acquire a cheap 1/12 Santa costume? I only need the hat and coat really. I want something my figures can wear. All I keep finding is a crummy stuff hat and a coat that's glued/sewn shut for hanging up or laying out in displays.
