yeah tamiya 1/72, might be the highest quality kit I've done yet so I'm interested in doing more tamiya in the future.
ironically I had the impression that tamiya kits were shit when I first started this hobby, I see now just how wrong I was.

it isn't, but it is when you're lacking a few braincells and manage to get cement to flow under your canopy mask and ruin the part, had to repair my paintjob a few times too because of capillary cement, note: small needle airbrush is really nice for repairing things without having to mask anything.
but enough whining, kit was really good and I learnt a lot doing it.

There is no contradiction here, their pre-2010 kits were not as good as the latest ones. My Type 0 was literally perfect as far as I was concerned, but looking at the older 1/35 Tamiya tanks I am probably going to have a bit different opinion.

Ouch. I painted mine with a spare canopy I wasn't going to use and glued the actual one at the last possible stage.

I'm in the process of priming it all atm. Posted a portion of it last thread >>9989302. After that comes black base coating for all the metallic bits. Expect pics once I start in on the metallic for sure. Here's a pic of the whole kit with some random M.S.G. weapons tossed on it before the arm modification & primer.

hg turn a has a lot of seams to weld, pretty much every part of every limb has one (and the back portion of the lower leg is annoying to paint because of that) but otherwise it's a great kit

Do people actually buy used gundams that are pre-built? Aside from using pieces for a custom build I guess, I wonder if people actually buy them. I'm not talking about professionally painted and detailed ones. I see people trying to unload their model kits on marketplace all the time that are either just straight built or have bare minimum panel lining, but they want like... close to retail for them lol. I feel like 90% of buying a model kit is because you actually want to build it yourself.

Sure, I understand it when you can get it cheap. It just seems counter-intuitive to buy one built at close to retail. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to unload some old stuff I don't care about, but it feels like once you buy your model kit, there really isn't any resale value on it unless you're doing spankin' paint jobs.

I have strong doubts about it being enamel since it smells nothing like it, it's actually good metallic paints and has the same properties as lacquer, but I've seen way too many people claiming it's enamel and I want to make sure once and for all.

I use alclad a fair amount. The metallics are lacquer, the clear coats and clear colors are enamel (Except aqua gloss which is a weird hybrid acrylic which can be cleaned up with water).

I've used the aqua and it seems to be a special water based acrylic specifically made to go over metallic lacquer paints.
I think the confusion and disinfo stems from these bottles being enamel despite being in a bottle that clearly says "lacquer", I've got a theory: the clearcoats are in the same line as "alclad II lacquer" and are meant to be used with their actual lacquer "alclad II lacquer" paints.
I understand because I used to think that alclad metallic was enamel at some point too.

There is a reason for this misconception.

Alclad Black Gloss Base is enamel and Alclad metallic lacquer coats that go over it are typically super thin in order to look good. So thin that if you try to clean up your panel lines over Alclad metallic with enamel thinner, the thinner would go right through the lacquer and attack gloss base and your paintjob will be ruined. That might have given people the idea that all Alclads are enamel.
The solution to that is to use gloss black lacquer for the base.

The fact that after trying both brilliant orange and normal orange and the brilliant Orange turns out to be some kind yellow color I don't want to wast another $5 for the bright orange

I read that bright orange is more of a red rather than orange

Sanding would make it even worse. The white you're seeing is the original color of the plastic under the paint.

Option 1. Vallejo mecha orange. Its pretty fucking close. Is acrylic paint though.
Option 2. Learn to mix colors. Its not that tough. A little orange a little white a dot of red etc. Otherwise youll be buying dozens of one color trying to get the perfect shade but still end hp having to mix.

When fully articulated hands became a thing for MG's? I use to build older models since there's no new ones of the mobile suits I like, and the only thing that bothers me a little are how old and limited the hands are.

Yes. Gunplas were designed to look great out of box. If you feel really brave you may topcoat and panel lining, but it's entirely optional. Don't let tryhards gaslight you into thinking otherwise.

If you can get your hands on this topcoat (Krylon Matte Finish) it might be cheaper for you (Especially if money is an issue, not the best topcoat but I have really good experience with this topcoat regardless of being acrylic). In the good ole' USA this topcoat is cheaper than Tamiya and Mr.Hobby Products. It's also larger so you get more product for your yen or whatever fucking chink currency you use. Other than that, Tamiya ts-80 clear flat spray is pretty good.
Also, be aware of your Humidity. If you're in some hot ass humid ass asian country where humidity is an issue, be aware of that because that shit can cause 'frosting' on your kits.

too matte and it looks like a toy again. due to the size of larger objects, a matte finish looks smoother from the viewing distance that you'd actually see the whole object at. most aircraft with a matte finish look closer to semi gloss or satin at proper viewing distance. (your matte surface finish is out of scale)

Oh yeah, that's Koto for you. An hour of planning/modding spent now saves a day when the painting starts.

But at least a non-scale kit should have enough optional stuff included that you don't need to do menial work like modding open pylons closed.

nope does not come with closed pylons but does not matter too much since the raptor is on gun sweeper duty 24/7, it has the option to easily swap to the extended pylon though.
also some material show the pylon "plates" being painted gray and some the same color as the machine, decisions, decisions...

That's debatable. MD skin is fairly shiny out of the box. MrColor SuperClear Flat works well in my experience.

Long Answer: My observations from the Moderoids I have built (Alseides, Scherezade, Ingram, Helldiver, Escaflowne, Super Pipimi, & 2 Molcars)

Go with the Nu Gundam. It's a bit pricier but it's big so the parts are more manageable than something small like Wing or Crossbone, and it should be an easy build compared to older kits with finnicky prebuilt frames or the Sazabi and it's notorious shoulder joint.
If the small size doesn't worry you get the Crossbone. It's small compared to early UC stuff but it's a really nice solid RG that shouldn't give you issues.

mg nu ver ka is when the current 'emotion manipulators' became the standard articulated hand, the knockoff copies of them and the Dalin/"DL MODEL FULL ACTION HANDS 1/100" are currently the best alternate choices to get. imo the Dalin/DL brand ones fit best with older kits, as the newer version stand out too much being more modern or not quite matching the style of older kits.

Hobby Base hands are ok, i've used them before but the Dalin seem to be meatier and fit the aesthetic of feddie suits.

Similar overall. The cat ears, front of the hair piece, pumpkin pants, and sandals being new molds make them just different enough to be new characters if you want them to be, but they share the same ornatio version faces. Since you only get parts for one girl and one zombie you end up with extra faces, but both of the printed zombie faces have open mouths.
Otherwise the pumpkin and other accessories are pretty fun.

knife compartment doesn't need any modifications unless you mean how it connects to the leg, which a simple c-clip conversion is fine since it's not loadbearing or anything.

The real answer is that "lol flat finish everything" is a brainlet take. You can buy or mix finishes from mirror shine you can see your face in to dead flat and lifeless as stone and everything in between. But on a basic, practical level you have gloss, matte, and satin. Any modeler worth a shit should always be asking "what finish will each part have, and why?". The right answer is rarely a single finish on everything and contrasting finish is absolute peak modeling. Nothing matches a beast with dry, flat scales and fur but shining eyes and a wet drooling maw, or a mech with a nice satin finish that has life but isn't plasticky, with glossy metal thruster bells and trim.
Even something simple like a Zaku can look a lot better with just a single color on the piece that has a different finish, like if you make Char's have satin on the red/salmon but full matte on all the grey parts.

Depends. They aren't consistent, but Megamis from the last couple years are fairly matte. They have a velvety skin that's very nice. I noticed that the MSG skin tends to be shiner, as is older girls' skin. Modern ones are very close to nice scale PVC figures' skin.
Bro tip: you can match that exactly using a Magic Eraser. Running one over her skin will give you that velvet finish.
But really you should be putting some matte sealer on skin anyway to make it have some good tooth to it so you can shade it with pastels or weathering pigments or colored pencil, if you aren't going to totally repaint the skin (which I don't recommend unless you're drastically altering her skin color).

Anyway you can buy 1 nippers,hobby knife, sanding sticks/nail polishing block, matte topcoat for like 30$, those are easy to use, require no skill and give you a fantastic result

Just remember to avoid anything with hobby in the name (but the knife)

SPN-120s have helped immensely with making thin fragile parts a joy to sand and prepare.

from 20+ years of doing this shit, the best nippers i've found (cuts closest and cleanest to the surface) is the pro zetsu by volks. isnt as 'smooth' a cut as the god hands, but its cut is much easier to manage.

mostly just busywork and cleanup but the difficult part comes when you include seam welding and have to think of ways to account for painting, mostly. very fun when you're a low intelligence modeler like me.
kits like these are nice because they let you know if you have any holes in your tool arsenal.

Most Koto kits (not just TSFs) are designed in such a way that you can't take arms, legs etc apart for painting after you've done all the seam welding.
So then you either have a resin kit-tier amount of masking to do or you need to reengineer some of the joints. In my builds I usually did the latter. Good saw is a must have tool for that.

Nah, certain expensive tools are definitely a luxery, and while its true that a more skilled modeler can get more out of a cheap tool than an amateur can, a lot of expensive tools only become really worth it when you get skilled enough to use them correctly.

For example, airbrushes and paint as another anon pointed out. Sure you can get the harbor freight airbrush for $20 and craft paints and make them work if you are skilled, but they can't compete with a $100+ Iwata dual action brush and something like GX paints in the hands of a skilled modeler. Similarly is the topic of godhands. Yes they are more expensive and its kind of debatable whether its worth getting them for just gunpla, but on certain military kits with insanely tiny pieces they are a godsend because cheaper nippers will snap the parts just cutting them off the runner.

Tldr; Yes skilled modelers can get more out of cheaper tools than an amateur can and an amateur can make up a bit of the skill gap with expensive tools, ,but a skilled modeler will get more out of any tool than an amateur will no matter the cost.

Couldn't decide which variant to paint this so I ended up following the colour guide for the 1/144 guncannon since I love simplistic the toy robot aesthetic. Probably part of the reason I like retro kits in general desu.
Also felt like I was attoning for something since the 1/144 guncannon was the first kit I tried to paint. Not going to post how that ended up since this is a blue board.
