Old doc from 20+years ago and I only just started to research. But the toys I buy are still PVC. Any industry heads here know if their are efforts being made to increase toy longevity for collectors?

Science/history retard here, what was the best decade for plastic? Sculpts and engineering are great now but that doesn't matter to me if my merch will slowly desintegrate and posion me in the process.

These are very weird questions. Most toys are made of abs, and good luck finding pvc alternatives. Materials are chosen based on affordability, and companies aren't going to build an entire factory to make a slightly different plastic unique to their brand. Further the R&D would be pointlessly expensive.

Pvc is chosen because its abundant, easy to get, and holds up pretty well. Toys weren't meant to be kept for 50 years in mint condition.

The only thing i can tell you is the yellowing on TF toys is fucked, the only way i've seen that happen is leaving clear plastic outside for a month. For that shit to age 20 years in box is a testament to hasbros manufacturing

most toys today don't even seem to use pvc though. they all feel like silicon or some other squishy flexible plastic.

It might be polypropylene or polyethylene. Everything i buy is ABS though. I don't like the bendy marvel legends.

because cutting longevity doesn't exactly work like a light switch and different environments can lead to shit breaking down a lot faster. Like literally months vs 2 years or 5 years from now. Parents and consumers would quickly know and start complaining and/or stop buying toys.

Basically all plastics they use are meant to last as long as possible. Even dollar store shit, apart from the engineering.
Engineering of the joints and reinforcing structure is where they'll cut costs on. So you'll know almost right away whether the product is made well or not.
They've basically perfected toy making and using PVCs. Adding antioxidants and plasticizers though are super fucking cheap, so any cost cutting here is almost worthless and self sabotage.

Of course, as we've all seen in the past decade, they've cut costs on paint first.

So if plastic breaks early, it's purely by accident. In terms of current figures, it seems like Kaiyodo is having trouble with the plastics breaking down, but they're charging upwards of $100 for their shit. How does a company that has been making action figures for over 20 years have this problem now? It's likely just an issue with the pigments/colors they're adding to the plastics, which was untested, and this new combo just didn't mix well.

This is part of why chemists are involved with the making of toys, especially with giant companies like Hasbro and Mattel, who have in house chemists and chemical engineers

And my parents sure as fuck would have taken it to the store, with no packaging at all, demanding a refund.

I'm sure there's a billion karens who would also take it up with the supreme court and the police demanding Matel stop stop hiding pesticides in hidden compartments to leak out on Friday the 13th or whatever satanic holiday Mattel is celebrating

In short, most parents know what's up, even if their kid demands a new toy every single grocery trip.

They're at the point where cracked parts are visible on the fucking BOXART due to their declined plastic quality.

Really sounds like nobody actually owns any toys here if you think PVC isn't commonly used.
Figuarts/Monsterarts, figma, etc. Are all solid PVC parts connected with ABS or sometimes POM.

It frightens me how many people here think the toys they buy aren't PVC or are mostly ABS. Unless you're buying Gundam model kits or some shit, you're buying mostly PVC limbs and accessories, an ABS central body and ABS for any points that need to have stability.
