Built the Moon Cake Factory today. I gotta say, I really dig the Monkie Kid sets.
I've ordered the Dragon Horse Jet which looks great based on the photos. The Power Loader is tempting me now just so I can get a Sandy big fig to round out the cast. I wish the availability was better; definitely feels like if I don't buy the sets for this theme before they retire I'll never be able to get them on the aftermarket at a reasonable price.

Does anyone have a link to the old thread or two where people were submitting lore for the iceberg? I don't remember one of my submissions. But the other one that I do remember that was not used was the tan vest pirate from Imperial Trading Post being named "Steve". Seconding this. I really hope we get a 4th season and new sets, but I kind of doubt it. Also, the Dragon Jet is top tier, but I had to do A LOT of mods to make Sandy's Power Loader mech acceptable. It's worth it for the big fig though.

Oh, and my runner up for underrated Lego Theme is Vidiyo. I loved the minifigs and colors of the sets, but the app was trash and everything was over priced because of the music licensing aspect which wasn't even worth it because, again, the app sucked. It really was a theme that needed a bit more time in the oven, some smaller sets and vehicles, and reasonable pricing to have been successful.

Yeah, the Power Loader Mech itself looks questionable, but I've got enough pieces from the Mining and Marvel mech kits left over from the Sigmatron mech that I should be able to do something. What are the major issues you found? I assume fixed elbows and knees?
The Noodle Tank has the same issues, but given it's a tank, I have an easier time accepting the limited movement. Tempted to slap an elbow into the hand arm though.

Are those Go-Karts from a set or are they all MOCs? They look great. Honestly the smaller builds from the MK sets are some of the highlights.

I'm disgusted by how much Vidiyo shit I've ended up buying. I have two more steeply discounted Boombox sets on the way to use for parts, I won the hiphop car for like $8 and I've picked up various bandmates. Like you've said the colours and figs are great and there's actually some pretty great techniques in some of the sets.

I desperately hope they revisit these fig moulds especially. The Slime guy from series 2 is great. I bought 2 of the bodies to make the two guys on the right.
I'm going to wind up with like 2 of each of the Alien Robot dudes and it'd be nice to put a ship together for them.

Here are the issues I found (and fixed) with the mech:
>shitty pre-bent knees. I completely redid the legs
>front of the mech left too much exposed, so I completely redid the front
>sides of the mech were completely exposed, so I had to fix that and add sides
>hand punching gimmick was retarded and messed with right arm articulation, so I removed it
>the right hand was designed kind of weird and disproportionate, so I had to redo the right hand
>back of the mech was super bare and open to accommodate what I assume was a shitty jetpack. I reworked it to provide more stability
After all that, the mech is actually pretty good. I really just wanted it for the big fig, but now I love it. Also, 3 of the 4 go karts are MOCs I put together to go with the Monkie Kid one that came with the MK Team Van.

yeah it's a really nice set. people shit on it here because 'muh scale reeeeeee it's too big it go with my other stuff reeeeee' but they neglect to realize it was never made to fit with anything, its a standalone ideas set that is just supposed to be a cool lil blacksmith house, and as that it is a very nice set, and a fun build with some neat build techniques.

bricklink is the place to do that. Sometimes you can find newer parts cheaper on Lego's online pick a brick, but in general bricklink is the baseline price tracker for the whole lego market so the prices are fair.

I want to do that with the robot alien guys. Once my second and third boombox arrive, I'll have 3 singers and 2 DJs. Singers look like soldiers/leaders cuz of the darker scheme and shoulder armour, so having more than the "mook" DJs is a bit wonky. A cape could make one of the singers a distinct Leader though then I could make a vehicle/mech for each of the soldiers and a larger base/vehicle for the DJs and Leader.
(Can also pick up the DJs for a reasonable price, thanks to a lack of furry/castle popularity tax, so I could just buy a few more and get a whole ass alien faction on the go.

The smaller set is better and here's why:

Luke Skywalker on the grappling hook can be lowered up and down by a gear hidden under an armor plate on the ATAT

Plus you could always buy a seperate battle pack if you wanted to fill up the seats. The smaller scale also makes it easier to modify, imo.

I have even found unopened sets at local goodwills in nicer neighborhoods. My guess is is provides a tax write of to stores that just need to get rid of overstock or display items quickly. They are usually the best sellers but are good for parts.

From what I understand they started making a lot of specific parts in the 90s and it almost bankrupt them. Now there's less new pieces but new ones do appear. I wanna say licensed sets usually have new parts, and thankfully they are more backward compatible with non licensed themes.

Some of us do agree that the use of these newer pieces kinda reduces the imagination of a build or the abstractness of the build, and if also might increase set price. But most of today's pieces are very good for MOC building if you can get some creativity going. Plus some of the new pieces do make certain builds look amazing. I'm not a big car guy but I really enjoy how some of the "newer" bricks/slopes/brackets flesh out accurate looking car models.

Pro tip: don't try to collect 1 of each molded piece unless you're rich, haha. Stick to what appeals to you.

That absolutely sums up the 2008 fantasy era.

Honestly I think it's a great castle theme. Dwarfs, skeletons, trolls, knights.

But the theme is plagued with the yellowing bleys and fragile light browns.

I do honestly believe it is one of the best castle themes. It fully embraces the large mold dragons too (we only get dinosaurs like that nowadays). Full on fantasy. We got a hint of ghosts and dragons in the 90's era, why not flesh it out?

I remember buying multiples of the main castle on clearance, and a dwarf mine. I have a lot of nostalgia for that era / theme.

They've gotten pretty colourful with City recently, the Stuntz sets and the Alien Ride all have this neon vibe. Balanced out with normal city colours it looks fine but if it's over saturated, it looks garish as hell and that's Vidiyo's issue; oversaturation. I think they might roll Vidiyo into City with music event themed sets to repurpose the unused minifigure moulds, if they toned the saturation of colour on the terrain down, it'd work fine.

But it'll include coloured quarter sized road plates and use Mario bases as part of the stage design, driving up the price and dooming really out of the box minifigure designs forever leaving us a hundred years of fleshies, Ninjago characters and people with hearing aids.

Basically I just really want to see the dinosaur guys.

Lots of stuff for Vidiyo Wave 3 was produced and then canceled. We've seen other minifigs.

Same. I've never gone for any of the winter village stuff, but these are cute, it's a whole playset, the buildings fit with the Creator 3-in-1 ones and it looks like it's easy enough to take the seasonal trappings off (snow and decorations look laid on top rather than built in).
Pleasantly surprised that the tram actually fits on tracks. I was expecting another "it's not a real train" repeat of the Hogwarts Express bullshit.

Considering picking up this bin for really cheap. I'm concerned a lot of it isn't authentic lego because there are some plates in non-lego sizes like the purple 10x20s, and big building pieces I can't identify. I'm specifically looking for minifig accessories and furnishing stuff so if it's mostly Friends that's fine, I just don't want to deal with too much non-lego. I'm going to ask the lady about it but I think it's a no-go. Most I'd do is 5 bucks.

It's not worth the drive to speculate. I offer such lowball numbers that I either spend the five bucks or don't bother. I love the people with Friends bins though because they always have accessories out the ass. I'm just tweaked out on those weird 10x20 plates and wondering what percentage is KO. I could go weenie mode and ask her to pour out the bin, but I don't really think I'm going to speculate further.

Just bought a Lego set for the first time in like 10 years. Saw it on clearance for $4 at Walmart and was feeling nostalgic. It's some Minecraft thing I don't especially care about, but for 4 bucks it was worth it just for the enjoyment of cracking it open and putting it all together.
It got me to wondering, are there any old lego themes that are fairly cheap to buy used? A quick glance at ebay and craigslist is turning up some ridiculously high prices for things I had as a kid, the old police station I had is selling for like twice what it cost me back in the day, as is the big Aqua Raiders submarine.
I'm a broke college student so I don't have much of a budget to work with, are there any neat old vehicles or whatever I could get for $10-$15 bucks online?

i understand nostalgia is a bitch but if you're on a tight budget i'd recommend to just get into modern lego. there are a lot of vehicles available these days, i'd recommend looking into the creator 3in1 theme as the sets contain mostly basic bricks that you can use to build your own stuff

My advise would be to look up the instructions for an old set you like, make a parts list and buy your bricks on bricklink or ebay. pick a brick is an option but the first two options may be more within your budget. I bought over 40 bricks on ebay this week at auction and paid less that 8 bucks shipping included.

I recently got back into lego myself and I have a hard time getting into the modern themes, they are generally gay. Creator has some ok sets. City sets look ok too, I could probably get into that. I like that modern pieces make it possible to make cool mechs, but fuck 95% of the licensed sets, I want retro space themes.

You're gonna need to be smart with your shopping but buying used bricks really isn't that bad. Bricks can be bought for as low as a nickle, some may sell for a quarter or a little more per. When you buy a lego set at the store you're paying for the bricks, the box, the instructions, the brand etc. But bricks can be had cheaply and instructions are free in pdf form. And if you keep it up you're gonna want to do MOCs anyway.

Hell I've seen bricks on bricklink for fractions of a cent, of course the seller has to set a minimum dollar buy amount for it to be worthwhile but, still. Lego can fit any budget.

As someone who got back to Lego just go on Bricklink and order parts from someone to build old sets with fresh new bricks. There are also people who sell old printed pieces for cheap sometimes because they have minor blemishes like the print is scratched or worn through age.

You can use a site like Brickset to find old sets and see their original prices to figure out of recreating a childhood set is affordable to you.

You might try finding a bulk lot on gumtree/facebook marketplace, beware as some are reselling without figs/accessories which are stripped out to sell online. You can get a large amount of parts for a good price.

Try looking at the stores with the most parts/closest to you and isolating the rarest parts first, you might be able to save by using fewer or closer stores. You may get something better depending on where you live.

I use this part for vehicle bed sides, hoods/roofs, containers/boxes, ship hulls, etc. so it looks like it has rivets. I also use these for building roofs.

guys, is it weird that I'm not actually happy with building lego?

I design something digitally and I'm super excited, I know its stable, that it would work and look great, on the render and I'm just super happy and pleased with the design.

Then I order the pieces, wait for sometimes to get all of them, build it and I feel nothing. I'm not proud, I'm not happy, I mean it looks great, I like to look at it, but otherwise my excitement about actually getting it into my hands is dwarfed by the excitement I felt when I designed the build.

Anyone experiencing something like that?

Imagine a world where the yearly police helicopter, shitty motorcycle, and ladder truck were spun off into a seperate "emergency services" theme and the actual Lego City line focused on transportation and civilian buildings.
There has to be at least 20 bland police/fire station sets in the line. Each of those could have been a supermarket, or an office building, or a condo high rise, or a library, or a metro station.

I have felt something similar when I have done the same thing. Designing is a big part of the hobby and an enjoyable process.
But I still get satisfaction from having it in hand, looking it over, posing things, and seeing it when I pass by.
A big part comes from designing digitally and building at another time. If you do it all at once with parts you have on hand, I doubt you will feel what you describe.

yeah I'm always buying whatever new creator 3in1s they put out in the £10-£20 price range, mainly for the bricks. They always have useful shapes in some interesting colours. On the other hand I wouldn't reccomend getting the classic sets. They usually have a good price to piece ratio but the bricks you get don't feel as useful to me.

Your demanding something not even Town had. I agree City could use a bit more details like Friends but that won't change the core of the theme.
I think the introduction of the new road system + characters and buildings from the tv show gave the theme some fresh air.
