what's the best way to panel line something? I don't know whether to try the markers or that thin paint that just fills the cracks
also where do I get unconventional colors for it? I want to maybe try panel lining the xenoblade 2 siren kit but some of it has gold and this sci-fi green lines and I can't find those colors for gundam markers and the like

If you are looking for panel line paints, Tamiya has a panel line accent paint in 6 colors, if I remember correctly. You have to use those in conjunction with enamel thinner to clean up your job. Also, you can't and shouldn't apply it on bare plastic. Check on Hobby Lobby and on the US based retailers online, they probably have a stock of it. One bottle can last you years so don't go there buying to stock up.

For those golden lines, either you have to hand paint them or mask the pieces to paint them. Or you could make it so as an anon said before and dilute the enamel gold on thinner until you can let it flow on the lines, the problem would be that you might need to use more paint than you expect.

Enamel on bare plastic can make it brittle and even make it crack and break apart if it pools on the nooks and crannies. That's why you paint it or you put a clear coat to protect it

It is enamel, but it is designed like that. The problem arises when you let the paint pool on the nook and crannies of the line. If you are careful (and lucky) you won't need to paint it, but if you are not gonna paint the plastic, at least put a clear topcoat on it to protect it

You can have both PAINT and TOPCOAT and it can still make it into a tiniest gap by cappillary effect and then you get pic related right at the end of your build.

The correct answer is not PAINT or TOPCOAT, it's CEMENT. Bare plastic where parts are glued together will not crack, painted plastic where parts are snapped together will crack. Simple.

Correct. Thennit will cause trouble. Why I as an unashamed snapshitter will put down the panel line on the runners. Wont get under and between parts then. Still some risk of damage but nothing like assembled.

As the other anon said, get the paint you want and mix it with thinner. Enamel paint plus some zippo fluid. You can make any color then. Also beware. Anything gold coated, metallics coated, metallic plastics and such will not like any sort of chemicals applied to it, even weaker ones. Itll crack and peel the coatings. No go there.

Zollidia is done and I'm taking him to a small hobby show tomorrow. Not so great that I'm expecting any awards but not so dull that Id be reluctant to show it off. What I'm really looking forward to is there's going to be a gunpla swap meet at the show for people looking to get rid of or trade their old kits.

That's something you're going to have to experiment with. Depends on your taste, the brand of oil paint, how old it is, etc etc.

You can always just get Mr Weathering washes, which will cover 95% of your needs.

One other thing while I'm at it.
Unlike Tamiya panel liners Mr Weathering bottles do not have the little brush. However MrHobby sells replacement cement brushes and those perfectly fit Mr Weathering bottles and work quite well.

What happens is the petroleum oils(naptha in this casue) will get trapped under petroleum based plastics and wont dry immediately and soaks into the plastic. Then it loses its bonding cohesion in its structure. Causes it to get brittle and crack. If it dries properly then its not an issue.
With acetone thined enamel it is another story as it can eat at the plastic surface. Same for lacquers but they dont seem to be as bad at disolving plastic. Spray paint tends to be really heavy on the enamel+acetone too.

Add a small swipe with a brush add drops of thinner and stir it until its drippy from the brush. Assuming enamel plus naptha here. Should be semi transparent but obviously see the color. If you over thin it you can leave it open for a little bit and keep stirring, if you dont want to use more paint. You wont need more than say a small bottle cap worth for a large mg kit.

I'm of the belief that enamel makes polystyrene brittle by affecting stressed plastic, something you will see a lot of in snapfit models.
so if you're not going to paint and will be using enamel that might not be a bad idea.

Actually I'm happy with it being clean and chose the GX "super smooth" flat for that reason as the finish. It works well with the red paint job and the fact that zollidia's weren't rolled out until almost the very end of the war and were basically clean and new.

P-bandai kits are produced based on the preorders. You'll have to wait a while but you'll definitely get your kits around the estimated date. Sometimes there are delays but usually a month or two unlike some toys that get delayed for several months or get cancelled.

So I ended up getting both Best Gundam in Show which came with a sponsored prize and Best Gundam as voted for by attendees of the show. It was a smaller show though and not a ton of entries (most of the other kits in this category were really weathered or dark painted kits with LEDs).

The thing I'm really happy about though is the swap meet/stall. Got some good trades and snagged a Leo S for $35. Also really happy to have found that 1/100 Maxter even if its already built. Going to clean it up and give it a full 'Murrica paint job.

He's what it looked like before I painted it anon. These old kits need a lot of love and masking tape and aren't as paint by number and conveniently part seperated with hidden seam lines as modern kits.

Tamiya panel line accent and Gundam marker pour type are totally fine to use on bare plastic, I've been doing it for years and only had one issue.

There's two "tricks" to it. Don't let let the paint pool in a spot (more relevant to the Tamiya bottles, make sure you're dabbing off the excess from the brush on the inside of the jar) and don't panel line assembled areas. This prevents pooling on inside of part and inside of joints.

Also with the Tamiya bottles, highly recommend using mixing balls or a vortex mixer, as the mixture will separate.

Yes. Capilary action. It wont always 100% fill a panel line but usually will. Use a light touch and it flows way better.

Right, obviously there's shading, highlighting, edge highlights and such, but I'm probably still a bit too inexperienced to make that kind of thing look good when I've never even painted a model before, so I feel like I'd be better off sticking with a bit of detailing on parts with missing color separation, panel lining, and then topcoating, vs trying to be fancy and botching it horribly.

to an extent. a matte will kill the satin plastic 'sheen' but it will still scatter light significantly differently from a painted build with the same finish and won't look as good. it's not all about the finish, even if you finish a kit painted with flat colours with a satin coat that matches the sheen of the plastic it will look different to bare plastic

Eh it really helps. You could use a pink rubber eraser but its alot if work and makes a mess. I being a lazy fuck just hit the surface of everything up with thst melamine foam shit and give everything a bit of a matte look and also it will rub off the excess. Can use like a 2000 grit sand paper too if you want.

Better to just use a q tip and a little thinner. Less work and all. If you have a little desk fan thise are handy at drying the liner and thinners off rapidly. All I can say other than that is its nothing to worry about and once you get into it youll see its easy and nothing to be afraid of.

That's all good anon. Additionally a cheap and easy way to improve the look of your model is to get a gundam marker for panel lining. Gray works for whites, brown for yellows and red, and black for everything else.

No prob anon. Just a heads up, there are multiple types of those markers. Pic related are the "basic" ones I guess. They're similar to regular fineline markers, thin point and the color doesn't run at all. Good for beginners.
Others are more liquid based, felt tipped and so on.

the key thing here is enamel thinners will only will damage stressed parts with micro cracks already in them (except for ABS which they eat without cracks). take the kit apart when lining and there won't be issues, or line before assembly

yes, but the cracks will be less wide so it will reduce some level of soaking that leads to cracking (and also prevent capillary action from sandwiched parts from drawing thinner into joints).

the silver is passable but the gold is more like a puke yellow color so it were the parts that I decided needed the gold paint

It is worth investing in a Godhand Nipper, it minimizes the work needed to remove nub marks and when paired with GodHand sandsticks with Sponged sandpaper. Perfect for non flat surfaces like most Mecha Musume kits. I use the Red single blade for the first cut and the Blue Single blade for the second cut and a Tamiya design knife for times when I cannot get the nipper flush with the area to remove the nub.

Godhands are good too but youll get better results with the raser and cheap nippers than just a godhand spn120. Worth having all in your tool box, just dont feel you have to buy everything all at once.

Yes it is good. Yes the dispae is cheaper. Alternatively there is an infini 3 way file set that is excellent for about the same price as a raser. Like that anon said keep some tape or a dry baint brush to dust the file out every so often and youll do good with whatever you decide to get.

The cape is comprised by 5 different sections made of some kind of PET material. It feels like a thin sheet of paper and prone to tear if you hamhand it.

The issue is that you have to attach each section to rectangular shaped holes inside the gold parts, then align everything together and sandwich the whole thing with the other half of the gold parts. The result is kinda flimsy and the PET sheets can end up misaligned by merely touching the cape. Worst case scenario you would have to separate all the pieces to make the damn PET sheets fit in their corresponding holes and put the whole cape together again.

The idea on paper is neat, I won't deny it, but the material of choice and the execution end up being a bit halfassed. The final result is still pretty cool looking for a really kickass Dukemon. I'm sure anyone who grew up watching Tamers would love to have this thing.

Really disappointed in this Dom prototype HG I just built. I haven't put the stickers on cause they're a pain in the ass but the pose-ability is really low and some of the pieces like the skirt and hands are very loose. This is my second kit, the first being Gouf custom HG which I enjoyed making and posing a lot better.

You wont get a good result that way. You would be better off cutting a bit of the sprue and piece to copy. Make a mold and cast the parts in resin. Problem with the sprue goo is it wont always dry evenly, gets air bubbles easily when drying, cant be put in a pressure chamber, tends to warp when drying, and will be extremely brittle. You can try but unless you find a magical mix ratio that accounts for colored plastic densities and all that, just cast with resin instead and save alot of wasted time.

If the part is small enough, your best strategy is to carve it out of the sprue/glue together pieces of sprue and then shape as needed.

Sure, if you have some unmixed silicone left over from past projects. Otherwise you will spend about the price of the full kit on silicone alone. There are some cheaper putty-like mold making materials, but those typically will not give you a crisp cast.

The problem with that statement is that "spruegoo" is basically plastic dissolved in cement and the crisper you want your cast to be the less viscous the solution has to be.
The only way to decrease viscosity of your goo is to add more cement, that will backfire however: to go back to solid state the cement must evaporate, so the more you add the more will have to evaporate and the more the final volume will decrease.
The usual honey-consistency spruegoo dries 2-5 days but it will not pour well at all. If you get your spruegoo to the consistency of water (which is what resin consistency is when you pour it) it will probably take a month to dry and it will shrink horribly.

tl;dr; dissolved plastic is not suitable for casting, at best it's a thick putty for patching holes and such.
