I miss this era of Transformers. I know they're not perfect, but I think they embody a design philosophy that I appreciate most. I like how they prioritized giving all the bots updated alt modes that looked good as toys in their own right. It really felt like, "What if Transformers happened in 2006?" as opposed to just being a shallow revival of an '80s franchise.

Also I miss vac-metal.

Sweet. I got the Henkei version not too long ago, I'm a big fan. I really love how Takara used to market their Transformers; it seemed like every toy had a mini-media campaign to make it feel desireable on its own. The LG-era comics were goat.

Western marketing is all, "You want this toy BECAUSE it reminds you of (thing you like)!"

Japanese toy marketing is just, "You want THIS TOY."

As someone who collects MP/3P almost exclusively these days, I agree. I loved how Classics felt like Generation 3 , a modern take on the characters.
I totally get that the market was crying out for a proper g1 updated line at retail but at this point I hope when we revisit the 84-86 cast WFC/Legacy hasn't touched its in more updated designs.

Titan Nemesis is an ark retool

The legs are the exact same right down to the opening door. Only the chest hood section looks different. Half the vehicle is partsformed to not make it look like the ark, but if you remove everything it’s the ark

the closest shot we had was titans return being retooled for a gen selects of him.
I'm guessing we got Leo Prime because 2023 commander is an optimus, so they still needed a smaller one for a normal price point.
So maaaaybe 2024.
But I wouldn't be surprised if we get a different prime then

his arms are entirely too wimpy for the rest of his frame, his beast mode kibble sits way too far off of him, not to mention it's extremely poorly integrated to the point where it's just armor, and the entire top of the mammoth becoming a gun was always a stupid idea.
Also that chest sculpt needs serious redoing.
Sure he was great for his time, but 25 years later and you can tell he's outdated.
Oh, and some paint in beast mode would be nice, wrist rotation too.

Original was based off of Soundwave's face while the Autobots were based off of Prowl's - there's a theory they were intended to be the original faction leaders. That aside, the case for the dude in the OP, Tarn, is the exact opposite of that - he specifically had his face mask made to resemble the Decepticon logo, not the other way around.

I kind of feel you but I worry a straight update would be worse than the original. Lio Convoy is better but then his old toy was a bit derpy, whilst Big Convoy has aged pretty well all things considered. That said I would be down for an update that maybe gets a bit creative with the design/aesthetic to compensate for modern budget.
Honestly back in TR I wanted a Big Convoy Leader that transformed between robot, robotic mammoth (ala the Alpha Trion from that line) and a base mode styled after a stone-age mammoth bone hut.
Also kinda wish he'd get a Westernized name too. Always liked the idea of "Colossus Prime" as a fairly direct translation.

only a very brief look at the tfw thread on yellowing showed a kingdom blaster.

side note my legacy galvatron yellowed on the back of the lower leg, last I heard it was only the hip skirts.
kinda shitty since I was quite impressed with him and now not so much even tho hes the same figure

Most of the things you’re asking for would be changing the design, which shouldn’t be the point of generations. Big’s kibble is his armor and guns, that’s just his design.

There would also be less paint in beast mode.

I don't see how people could be nostalgic for 2006 classics. There were so few figures. I've got the whole line from Magnus vs Skywarp to shit like Devastator and all the legends figures.

What they're doing now is way better even when classics became Universe 2.0. So much stuff is bring brought back in comparison.

I like them because they felt like the Energon/Cybertron figure stripped of any of the obtrusive gimmicks, had a very streamlined design.
Once the movie hit and we got Universe 2.0 they never quite recaptured the spark. Each progressive series had a theme they tried to stick to(realistic vehicles, anniversary, combiners, headmasters, G1 accuracy, etc) that hurt the purity of just making a figure with some classic inspiration but modern aesthetics.

What are you selling? Most Classics/Universe/Generations stuff seems to have retained its value even loose. Try the BST maybe? Goodwill is a total waste, they'll just throw most of it out. Otherwise consider selling in lots on ebay.

The last 5 years have stuck way closer to fiction designs,though. Heavy redesigns was 16 years ago until 6 years ago with classics through Prime wars.
You could redesign Big to use less shellforming but it wouldn't be as close to the anime loo,and would get would of all the weapons his kibble gives him.

Universe 2.0 was a pain the ass for a couple of reasons:

1. The bullsthit "all vehicles need to be hyper-realistic with realistic coloring" rule which forced a tank Galvatron and oversized barely resembling Powerglider down our throats and nearly fucked up Cyclonus.

2. The fact that it came out at the same time as the second TF movie film, which made Universe 2.0 a MASSIVE chore to collect, as stores over-ordered the Revenge of the Fallen line and either underordered (as in one case per wave per store) Universe 2.0 or straight up REFUSED to order Universe 2.0 stuff in favor of only ordering Bayformer stuff.

I had to Ebay order about 90% of the Universe 2.0 figures I ended up buying because they never ever appeared at retail where I lived, or where figures I only saw ONCE in stores and bought as soon as I saw them, because stores only got one case in and one case only of their wave meaning if I didn't buy them when I saw them, they'd be gone and the store would never get more of them in stock.

All of the art for the regular characters/vehicle modes are just screencaps from the show, but 14 of 15 characters that are receiving cards have shattered glass versions that have actual art of those versions of the characters.

On that topic, is there not a shattered glass version of Arcee? She's the only character not to receive that treatment as a card.

Well in the Funpub Shattered Glass, Arcee was a reuse of the Scout Glass Movie Arcee. Has not appeared in the new Shattered Glass. The wacky team guy of excited about everything and strange decision making said he considered Flamewar to also be Shattered Glass Arcee, but the Arcee in M:tG set is based on the G1 cartoon design instead of the Arcee that Flamewar is recolored from, so they wrote themselves into a hole.

The thing is the weapons aren't meant to be part of the robot, they're all parts of the mammoth mode.You can make them peg in tighter(possibly at the expense of range of motion) but making the shin guns just tuck inside his lower legs or his hip flanks fold to his back would just be an entirely different design.

Oh I know, I was just musing that out of all the redesigns Cybertron Red Alert felt the closest to his Armada self. Cybertron was such a jump from armada in engineering and it really shows in Red Alert. His smaller chest seems like it was inspired by the Armada cartoon model.
On that note I always wanted to see Cybertron Hot Shot in yellow. I really liked the progressive growing he has from armada-Cybertron. even if the show didn't follow that it was cool seeing him get "older" every year.

Iktf bro. I passed on clampdown like 10 times and I only saw Scourge twice. I want them both but I can’t seem to find them anywhere now. Velocitron is still shipping though, so there is still time. Also, I still have not opened Cosmos after being one of the very first people to find him.

Funny story I haven’t told yet; based on where I live and how often I hunt I have been the very first person in the country to find lots of different figures over the years. I actually found Cosmos before any reports and I thought it was a T30 rerelease and left it on the shelf. I could’ve sold it for about $300 at that moment in time.

He was designed by Aaron Archer to be the same character in all three, and that's what matters to me. For what its worth he goes from Hot Rod in ML to Hot Shot in SL so even that didn't keep the names the same. A few ML characters got name changed in SL as well, mainly those who shared their JP name with a G1 character who got an homage in SL.

Just saying that body changes without personality/identity changes aren't uncommon in Transformers. I started with Beast Wars, so Armada Hot Shot being Energon and then Cybertron Hot Shot seemed like no big deal to me. G2 already had stuff like explaining Optimus being able to just change bodies on the fly.
I'd love to ask Aaron Archer about his design ideas through the UT because there's a lot of visual storytelling in those designs(which is something he's said he likes to incorporate). Like how Cybertron Megatron's armor is meant to look like its made out of Unicron parts.

That said, my understanding is that the Japanese version of Cybertron, Galaxy Force, was originally intended to be separate from Armada and Energon, but got shoehorned into being part of a trilogy late in development. So Cybertron Hot Shot was originally going to be a different guy, but what we got was ultimately the same character as the one in Armada and Energon.

Also, just for the record, his Cybertron design was his best look.

The UT toyline/premises were planned out by Aaron Archer with Takara engineers. The animes were done outside of Takara and largely did their own thing. For example, Hoist wasn't supposed to be Smokescreen's upgrade, but his replacement.
So it depends what you give priority to. For some reason people seem to treat Galaxy Force as coming before the toyline conceptually and kowtow to that, but it was meant to adapt the toyline Hasbro planned out.

I was a kid when Beast Wars came out, and I always envied the kids that got the mega-class bots, ESPECIALLY Polar Claw, while all I had was scouts
Then when I was an adult I went out and had a look at Polar Claw, and he was kind of ass

"Scream" can be either a noun or a verb, as in "He let out a scream" (noun), or "We all scream for ice cream" (verb). Since "scream" can be either, it's hard to say what it should be here, but since "star" is a noun, it's probably safest to assume it's a noun.

"Skywarp" is a little tougher to pin down, because "warp" is definitely a verb, but "sky" is a noun. Obviously "skywarp" isn't a real word, but if it were, due to its compound nature, it's equally possible it could've been used as a noun or a verb.

And yes, "cliffjumper" is still a noun because of the "er" at the end. If it was "cliffjump," then it would be a verb. But as it is, you don't say, "I'm going to jumper off this cliff," or, "He jumpered really high," because "jumper" isn't a verb.

There's a difference between what "scale" actually means, and how some fans use it in slang.

When people talk about CHUG scale, they usually just mean, "Is about a size where it looks like it fits in with most CHUG figures," even if the robot heights don't fit official size charts or if the vehicle modes are out of proportion with each other. It's gotten kinda wonky since there are characters in multiple size classes now, but it's been a pretty common term in the fandom for years, even if it's a bit nebulous.

It feels like if unique molds get exclusive-ed, it's usually when they're what they consider a hot ticket item, like every Transformers fan will want a tape deck Soundwave, or if they do a subline like Speedia 500, they'll add some exclusive molds to increase the appeal

So if they are exclusives, I'm expecting it in the new capsule collection they're doing later next year.

The Mammoth, Spinosaurus, Sabertooth, and a yet to be shown Fossilizer were intended to combine. Spindle and Masterdonus come with components for the combiner including being able to form the head. There are zero instructions to show this

Considering that when Classics first came out, Alternators and Masterpiece were the other two "G1" lines, yes, that was probably the distinction back then. Nowadays, the two main other "scales" I still hear people talk about are MP scale and Legends scale (which is an odd distinction since there can be legends class figures in the Generations line). To be honest, I don't hear the term "CHUG scale" nearly as much as I used to, probably because the Generations aesthetic has evolved quite a bit since Classics, Henkei, and Universe 2.0, making them harder to group together under a single umbrella. For a while, I started to hear, "deluxe scale," more often than "CHUG scale," but ever since Generations moved classes more toward parts count and plastic mass rather than figure size, I feel like slang "scales" might be moving away from size classes and back to toylines. Still, when someone does refer to CHUG scale, there's enough precedent for it that most people get what they're talking about, even if the term has become somewhat of a misnomer over the years.

I feel like the more the series went on they became a little goofier, in Headmasters they were relegated to complete comic relief. This could be seen as Unicrons influence dissipating and their original personalities coming back to the fore. Not comic book/tech spec bio accurate personality but goofy cartoon goons, which works more for Skywarp than TC I suppose, but it's how I reason it/head-cannon it. Also I appreciate you are trying to be diplomatic with the "redacted" gag but Skywarp was named in the script for TFTM as the one being reformatted so, animation errors aside: Skywarp = Cyclonus.
Just Curious though anon, as I understand completely your reasoning with "personality death", so was wondering what you think off a personal bugbear of mine (and many others I'm sure) in Grimlock? He and the other Dinobots go from being the Autobots trump card, the cavalry to be called in as it were - to S3's complete and utter retardicon. To me S1 and S3 Grimmy, while I know they are the same character, are not at all.

Yeah I think that's got something to do with it, but PotP also seems to have had zero budget which feels like a more direct problem
WFC is of a much higher engineering and materials quality, I'm not sure PotP having a gimmick was the sole reason it was so bad

POTP was cut in half, it was supposed to be 2 years like titans return hence the initial mold teases for dinoking and the seacons in the mainline, but they had to get shelved since hasbro was very chop chop
and honetsly we're pretty lucky we got as many 'obscure' (in casual collector terms) guys like the terrocons , darkwing and dreadwind etc. if it 2 years like TR, they would have put out the obvious repaints first instead, like they did for octone and blitzwing
plus they put a lot of effort into the 3 Prime Wars special releases to round off our headmasters collections
they also suffered a lot of extra criticism and raised expectations due to the price increase, and because it was new to them they weren't really maximising their production potential at that time (think how first games every console generation suck compared to games released years later after devs can come to grips with them)
i can appreciate the intention with POTP but it definitely was disappointing

It didn't help it, more so for how noisy it was. Prime masters were just in the way bringing nothing noteworthy to play value. Think if they ditched that, Combiner hands and feet would have been produced differently, the torsos of the combiners and leaders wouldn't have to factor in a spot for PM. Getting rid of them alone would have helped a good deal.

I once had a BBTS preorder for some Power Ranger shit that was delayed for a year
Eventually I just cancelled and picked up most of what I was waiting for on Amazon

Actually hoping my MP Getsuei preorder gets delayed at least a week and a half. They're starting to pop up from other stores it seems, but I'm gonna be a bit short this week because of surprise life expenses
