Looking back, what was the meta on these things?
When I was a kid, my extended family had about 4 of them and we all thought Me-Fisto (The yellow-green) one was completely overpowered due to his arm size.

I got mine in 2001 I think.

I was so hyped at all the cool fights me and my friends would get into with these. I could never convince any of them to get one.

That's actually the same exact toy, it just has an accessory pack attached. Along with the robots, the line had armor addons sold separately for each robot, advertised to extend their reach and improve their defenses. The one on the left also has armor applied, pic related is what it normally looks like.

They all had armor sets that were suspiciously designed as if to balance them a bit better.
Bitor(green purple) had swinging claws but it was harder to hit the tail (rod on the back that registered "damage" when touched) with them than Me-Fisto.

The claw gave him some reach.

Rumble Robots were among their best ideas, but ironically one of their last before going defunct. Comedy Central was airing BattleBots, Every kid knew about Gundam or Metabots; Yugioh and Pokemon were sparking interest in card games.

So they combined the two, released a set of RC Robots and a trading card system where you'd buy card packs and use them to upgrade the robots before a fight. What was more crazy than it not taking off as much as they probably hoped, is that Japan didn't think of it first.
