I assume the inspiration for it comes from certain cars built to run on the salt flats. Obviously a lot of Ford in it, but these cars often have unique twists added by the builders so pinning down a specific inspiration is tough

I love collecting late 80s/early 90s cheap chink shit.

These 4 are my fav. They seem to be Gingell, scale 1:55 rather than usual 1:64. They are made of very thin diecast. White DAtsun is one I remember playing a lot as a kid. Blue Porsche is neat too. BMW and gold Maserati are meh.

I also love these 3 little bois. Mustang is neat, so is Mercedes, ironically detailed for chink shit. Pickup truck was a gift from my primary school friend when he was about to move out of my town. He had a lot of these american cars you see in blockbuster movies while my collection was mostly made of whatever european or japanese shit chinks ripped off.

It’s dependent if that attitude extends to other things. Personally, I hoard an unhealthy amount of diecast. However, I absolutely detest clutter and I’m very particular about everything having a proper space that leaves the floors clean and clear for walking.

Story time boys:
I was in maybe first/second grade and playing with it in the school cafeteria. Some kid and I had setup some kind of ramp we were launching it off of. He went to go retrieve it and I heard a loud crunch. He came back with it saying something like "wow look at all the damage from that crash". I immediately knew that he had stomped on it and that his intention the whole time with the ramp was to crash/destroy it. That turned into my second school fist fight lol.

My first school fight was shortly before that. Some kid kept making fun of me for having a pink lunchbox, pic related. I told my Dad and he basically told me that if someone keeps fucking with you, punch them straight in the nose. You may get in trouble, but they will leave you alone after that (White kid in a white school lol). I did just that. The kid dropped and started crying. I ended up getting suspended from recess for about a week, but he never fucked with me again. We basically became friends. My Mom was pissed at me, but my Dad later came in my room and said "good job, buddy".

I almost got expelled from school over a toy car and a My Pet Monster lunchbox lol.

Weirdest thing is that those cheapo chink castings are still being made and sold for the half, (and sometimes, in the worst cases) for the quarter of the price of MBX or HW
They are pretty hard to find, tho. In my country, i've only seen them in the underground subway shops, and even there they are slowly vanishing away.

bought a beat up majorette stunt heroes garage/factory for 1.47e. it does have most of the pieces but it is missing some of the more essential track. can't really complain it cost so little. maybe i can craft something fun out of it or try to fit hot wheels track on it.

What I was talking about are the cars that have literally no brand or name on them because the chink factory they were made in probably stopped existing by the time those cars reached the states

Back then when the Ferrari Racers line came out in 2007 there were no Real Riders wheels that would fit the looks and aesthetics of the Ferrari cars. Mostly used for classic cars but not sports or super cars. COMO6 wheels from Acceleracers were low profile and would fit and complement the Ferrari cars very nicely. Then the idea evolved into applying those wheels onto other car manufacturers and so Speed Machines was born. The idea didn't last though, the second wave in 2013 ditched the COMO6 wheels and used whatever normal set of wheels they had lying around, presumably because cost and COMO6 wheels weren't being made anymore.

Theres a lot of factors that go into this. In a straight line race, the metal body/base funny cars from the 80s and 90s are untouchable because of their high weight and unique distribution of weight. On a track with loops, the bodies tend to open up which either slows them down or just causes them to fly off the track.

The Huffman Stocker is probably what Id give a Jack of all trades to. It’s metal/metal so it’s competitive in straights, but it’s also compact enough that it can handle loops and sharp turns. Another good contender that may be easier to find is the 77 Dodge van.

Dumb question but how come the 2018 redline '67 mustang doesn't have an opening hood while most of the other cars in the series do? I wanted to get a redline without having to buy an actual 1967 one and this is very disappointing. Luckily the 1994 version (released for the 25th anniversary of HW) doesn't suffer from this problem but that just makes it more confusing (how were they able to do it on the 94 version but not the 2018 one?)

Some time between 1994 and 2018 the casting was retooled to be cheaper to produce and they were too cheap and/or lazy to retool it again.

is it a bad idea to purchase old HW still in the packaging? i'm worried that as soon as i open the blister and put my hands on one it'll crumble with even the smallest bit of force. i'm not going to be playing with them, just putting them in a display case.

also before you freak out (NOOO DON'T OPEN THEM) they're all 90s era cars that go for $5-10 on eBay.

There is one single exception. The vast majority of car from I believe 1971 was made with a very low quality metal that after a few years, crumbles to powder. But I doubt you will find many of those still in the package

For some reason Maisto had one out almost at the same time too. I did some research to find out the differences and then settled for the Revell and really love it to bits.

Otto released one in 2020 or so which is basically fucking obscene looking. Would love to have one of these but I can't justify pumping that sort of money into a model right now. 10 bucks are okay, original 70 bucks Otto price would be pushing it but 150 to 200 scalpers are asking for now is a no.

Greenlight and Auto World are probably your best bet for realism, however many complain that they have been skimping on quality lately.

As you start going up the size chart, you need to ask yourself how much detail you care about versus price. And the solido doesn't have opening trunk and hood, so technically out of all variations, those made by Revell are the best diecast models of BMW 850 in 1/18th scale

That’s a metal/metal casting iirc so you will have to drill out the rivets. Then you carefully pull out the bad axle, it will likely have a small clip holding it in place that you don’t want to break if possible. Snip the bad axle in the center so you can pull the wheels off to put on a new axle. Then do this process in reverse, except you will have to tap small screws into the rivet posts to hold the base and body together

Just pay for a stall thwre (use a pasting board if you dont have an actual stall) and sell them for a 50p/quid each. Youd be surprised how many kids will buy a few at a time, never mind fat neckbeard "collectors" and mums who saw an episode of that show where the guy buys rare toys and sells them.

Or do a facebook raffle. 3.50 a number, winner gets the lot.

Depends.
The front and tail lights on the Revell model look really really bad while the ones on the Solido are a lot better and the Otto ones the best with lots of detail. Revell one also lacks detail in many places like around the windows for example (just plain transparent plastic bordering on metal without any black decals or simulated rubber gaskets).

So yeah in terms of looks the others are clearly ahead but if you're after features then the Revell one with all those openings is the best for you I guess.

That is exactly what I'm gonna try. It's just the pin of the translucent plastic that goes through the metal to keep the plastic in place and since it's dark inside the model the pin appears as dark dot.
So theoretically it should work by cutting off the pin and then glue it in place with a good crystal clear glue that won't get ugly after a couple months.
My goal though is to 3D print reflectors to put behind the plastic for some more detail. Will be fun to tinker around with that stuff

Also, BMW 850 is well represented in this scale too
Schabak, for example, made an impressive model with openable doors, hood, trunk, and even movable headlights, which even Revell 1/18 doesnt have

Don't know about others but at least I love 1/18 for decorative purposes in my home and rarely interact with them once set up. For interaction with models I have my RC/scale car building hobby so I don't need the decoration cars to have working doors especially since the doors opened distracts from the shape/look of the car.
1/18 works well as deco since 1/43 just appears as tiny toy visually completely lost in the context of a home while 1/18 stands out really nicely.

Sometimes I can't believe how small the scale car enthusiasts world actually is.
Most people think those cars are toys for babbies and the funnily, the bigger the scale cars get the smaller the group of enthusiasts.
1/64 is probably the biggest group, 1/43 has the most fans in Europoor and 1/18 ... especially in 2022 seems like a tiny village of people left on the planet. It seems like there are less and less scale car collectors and RC car enthusiasts in general.

I think its the fact that we have video games like Gtan Turismo and Asserto Corsa, especially the latter being modable, that people stopped buying cars and just "drive them".
