For Hasbro, it's not really worth making a million dollars from selling 10,000 $100 figures when their resources can be better put into making $100,000,000 from selling 5,000,000 $20 figures.
If you go into all the technicalities and specifics, it's far less than that.
If they were to do it on a regular basis, they would need to make changes in their factories in order to produce toys that actually look like they're worth $50 (very few 6" figures do anyway) and that's giant investment for little revenue.
So Hasbro just does less than a dozen limited releases per year, using the same factories they use to make children toys, with no increase in quality, and actually write off these limited releases as a marketing expense. IT generates a ton of news and media hype whenever they're announced, which is far better than announcing Snake Eyes is a female to male transexual that you now normally see modern companies do.
The extra value comes solely from being a limited release. IT's nothing but fanwank.
